Janice was born June 18, 1942, to Joseph Francis Cherveny and Dorothy Irene Combs in Grand Junction, Colorado. She graduated from Grand Junction High School in 1960, then attended Mesa College where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Humanities. She continued learning throughout her life, including taking Latin and Greek classes in her early 70s.
Jan married Errol Lakin on June 8, 1961, in Grand Junction.
She subsequently wed Larry Warren on August, 9, 1974, on Glade Park.
Jan was a bookkeeper for a number of companies in the Grand Junction area before starting her own bookkeeping business.
She was very active with the Grand Junction Women’s Center and worked to improve the lives of many women in that role. She was also a senior partner in the Partners Program. She was a member of the Mesa Fiber Arts Guild, where she carried a passion for spinning, knitting, crocheting, and various forms of needlepoint. Her annual hand-made Christmas ornaments given to her family and friends are still treasured Christmas tree adornments.
Janice was very interested in academics and learning. She was the quintessential teacher, whether in the classroom or in a private setting. She was an avid reader and consumed volumes of literature covering a wide range of subjects and genres. If you named a subject, she probably had a book about it.
She also studied, practiced, and played classical piano most of her life. Many enjoyed her piano practice sessions and recitals well into her senior years.
She enjoyed planting and nurturing her flowers and surrounded her home with flowerpots and plants.
She is survived by her brother Robert Cherveny of Grand Junction, her son Randy (Vicki) Lakin of Montrose, her daughter Anna Walters of Grand Junction, and her son David (Kelli) Lakin of Grand Junction. She was blessed with seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She had a very special bond with her grandson Joshua Walters. They enjoyed discussing what they had read and learned. She also encouraged his writing and artistic endeavors.
A celebration of her life will be held at The Art Center of Western Colorado, 1803 N. 7th Street, Grand Junction, Colorado, on May 25, 2024, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. All are welcome to come and visit and enjoy the surroundings that Jan enjoyed and in the manner that she wished for us to share.
She spent her life in the Grand Valley; her ancestors were instrumental in settling and starting the thriving community that is now Grand Junction. She has added her voice and influence to that prosperity.
She IS loved, and will be missed.
