The halls of the Atrium, The Fountains of Hilltop, and Aspen Ridge will miss the “Yoo-hoo” of Mia Dietvorst. Mia Dietvorst passed away on December 11, 2018 at the age of 95. Mia was born in 1923 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
She sends a loving “Yoo-hoo” to her brother, Harry; his partner, Co’the; and all her nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews in the Netherlands.
She married Jacobus “Jim” Dietvorst in 1945. They and four of their five children immigrated to the United States in 1957. The fifth child, Lucia, was born in the United States. The Dietvorsts became citizens in 1962.
Mia, a devout Catholic, was a supporter of the Immaculate Heart of Mary parish—Catholic Outreach, and Hope West. Faith sustained Mia and Jim early in occupied Holland during WWII (Mia a teenager, Jim nearly 4 years older) marrying right after the war (Amsterdam was liberated in May 1945). It also sustained them as a young family, through immigration to a new country/language/culture--"the land of opportunity” (an adage frequently expressed in the home). During the last 15 years she resided at the Atrium (an active member of the Quilting Group), then the Fountains at Hilltop, and last at Aspen Ridge.
Mia made too many friends to name. She sends a fond “Yoo-hoo” to all of them.
Mia was preceded in death by her husband, Jacobus “Jim.” She is survived by her five children (and their spouses): Annemieke Ambrosier (Gary Ambrosier), Tom Dietvorst (Virginia Berkeley), Mike Dietvorst (Virginia Dietvorst), Jim Dietvorst (Diana Dietvorst) and Lucia Bird (Dan Bird); her grandchildren (and their spouses): Amy Ambrosier (Josh Udesen), Jeff Ambrosier (Elise Spofford), Berkeley Dietvorst (Laura Nitowski), Carsten Dietvorst, Anneke Dietvorst, Benjamin Bird and Joseph Bird; and her great-grandchildren: Sydney Udesen, and Citori Ambrosier.
They all yell back to her loudly and lovingly, “Yoo-hoo.”
A Memorial Mass will be held at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church of Grand Junction on Monday, December 31, 2018 at 9:00am.
