Thomas G. Towner passed away peacefully March 28, 2018 at St. Mary’s Medical Center. He was 74. Thomas was born on January 15, 1944, in Ft. Worth, Texas, from the union of John and Elnora Towner. He spent his childhood in Wichita, Kansas, and later attended Kansas State University where he received his BA and graduated Cum Laude in 1966. In 1970, he received his MD from the University of Kansas Medical School. He served 9 years in the US Army Medical Corps and was stationed in Hawaii, Texas, and Colorado.
He met Lori Camp on a blind date to Pizza Hut and they were married September 28, 1974, in San Antonio, Texas. They started a family in Parker, Colorado, then moved to Grand Junction in 1978. Thomas was the town’s first Gastroenterologist and continued to practice for 28 years. Thomas was a member of the ASGE (American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy), and the AMA (American Medical Association).
Upon retiring in 2006, Thomas built the barn of his dreams and spent the summers sailing the coast of Maine with Lori as his First Mate.
Thomas requested his final words to read: “Thomas G. Towner- MD, Major US Army Medical Corps, Father, Husband, Son, Brother, Patriot, Physician, Gastroenterologist, Humorist, Historian, Astronomer, Sailor, World Traveler. Not so fluent in German, but I tried. F@%k the Lotto! Ahh sh*t, I’m going to miss the last season of Game of Thrones! It’s been a good life.”
Thomas leaves behind his spouse of 43 years, Lori Towner, and their five children: Bryan (Candace) Towner, Mark Towner, Eric (Kelly) Towner, Greg (Dusadee) Towner, and Jenny (Shawn) McKibben. He is also survived by his four siblings; Sarajane McCully, Jack Towner, Jeff Towner, and Tim Towner. His seven grandchildren will cherish his memory and continue to share his stories.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, April 10, 2018, at Martin Mortuary with family visitation beginning at 10:00 AM. A committal service with military honors will be held at 1:00 PM following services. Friends and family may leave their condolences and memories of Thomas in the guestbook at the bottom of the page.
