Bettie Jean Warren Spencer, of Arlington, died Tuesday October 22, 2013 at the age of 82. Bettie was born on June 11, 1931 to Boyd and Adalia Ard Warren. Her father died when she was eleven months old and she was reared throughout the Great Depression by her devoted single mother. Bettie graduated from Grand Prairie High School in 1948. On April 22, 1951 she married Dan F. Spencer Jr. and moved to San Antonio, where Dan was stationed in the Air Force. She was preceded in death by her son, Jeffrey Boyd Spencer. She is survived by her husband Dan, her son Dan III, his wife Chris, granddaughters Elise, Sabrina, Elizabeth and Madison, and grandsons Mclaren and Warren Spencer (Jeffrey's sons), Dan's brothers Ronnie and "Mickey" (Gail) and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Dan's job with Sears, Roebuck & Co. brought about many job transfers, and as a result Bettie and Dan lived in several locations in the Southwest and then the Midwest. Bettie was a lifelong antiques collector, and gained considerable knowledge about antiques and collectibles, to the point where she was frequently consulted by others with a similar interest. Upon Dan's retirement from Sears the couple lived for most of two years in England, where Dan worked as a management consultant. Bettie enjoyed England, and would take buses and trains to various towns, exploring the countryside and talking to local people. In one village near their home she was known as "The American Lady." They subsequently lived in Scottsdale, AZ and moved to Arlington in 2006. Bettie was smart and funny and loved clothes, which she wore well. She will be terribly missed by her family and friends. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 pm on Saturday, October 26 at the First Christian Church, 202 W. Tarrant Rd, Grand Prairie. The family requests no flowers.
