Gary Dwayne Joiner, 68, was called home by our Heavenly Father May 30, 2014, at his home in Grand Prairie, TX after fighting a long battle with COPD. He was surrounded by his family and close friends. He was born January 31, 1946, in Union, MS to Ed and Lois Joiner. He served in the US Army, during the Vietnam War as a Specialist, Demolitions Expert and spent 13 months 1967 in Vietnam, receiving numerous awards including The Purple Heart and Presidential Citations. Gary married Linda on May 6, 1967. They made their home in Grand Prairie with daughter Rone, and second daughter, Shannon, and a son, Dwayne. After several jobs, he found one with the city of Grand Prairie, later promoted to Assistant Superintendent over the Street Department. He enjoyed his work and retired after many years. In his younger years, he loved painting cars. Though Gary dropped out of high school, he later obtained a GED, and continued to Texas A&M for an Engineering Degree. Friend to everyone, liked to play jokes on friends, loved to laugh. Always there to lend an ear and offer good advice. Generous to a fault, he was always ready to help anyone in need. To some a hero, a father, their everything. Deeply loved by family, well liked, respected by everyone he encountered. He deeply loved, cherished and respected his wife, Linda. You could not ask for a better father, because he was loving, generous, trustworthy, thoughtful and considerate of our feelings. He was protective, and although he might get us out of trouble, when we were alone he would tell us what he really thought about what we had done. A precious father, who can't be replaced. We love you Daddy, we will miss you calling us “Honey”, “Babydoll” , “Darlin”, “Sissy” and “Budrow” when you would try to keep us calm or talk about something important and it will be difficult to go on without you. He will be dearly missed by all. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the COPD foundation.
