Phenelvia Beatrice Strickland

Penny Jones Strickland of Grand Prairie passed away peacefully on May 17, 2021 from a stroke, surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Strickland was preceded in death by her father, Theron “Buddy” Jones, mother Nadine Jones, and sister Elizabeth St. Romain.

Born November 7, 1941 in Marshall, TX to Theron “Buddy” and Nadine Jones, Penny was a loving wife, sister, mother, and grandmother, called “Grammer” by her four grandchildren. Penny had a great love for reading, especially the ABC books she read to her grandchildren. She enjoyed word games so much she reached the top level on an iPhone game and was forced to stop when she ran out of puzzles to solve! She lived out her abiding faith in Christ as His humble and faithful servant, showing unconditional love for her family, and unselfishly and quietly helping many others. In her professional life, Penny was a teacher in Everman, Euless, and Grand Prairie. After retiring in 2006, she continued serving others in various ways, including volunteering for the First Baptist Church of Grand Prairie food pantry, the Women’s Job Corps, the Adult G.E.D. Preparation Program, and as a teacher in the First Baptist Women’s Sunday School Class. Penny was an active and faithful member of First Baptist Church Grand Prairie for 40 years.

Penny is survived by Edward Strickland, her husband--and Uber driver--of 32 years, son Greg Pogue and wife Shannon of Tyler; daughter Alana Nicely and husband Kris of Weatherford, and grandchildren Jack Pogue, Benjamin Pogue, Cole Nicely, and Kyla Nicely. She also left behind her sister, Peggy Hopkins and husband Don of Flint, TX, sister Sue Cooper and husband J.C. of Van Alstyne, TX, sister Therolyn Iblings and husband Paul of Benton, LA, brother-in-law Roy St. Romain of Harleton, TX, and brother-in-law Jay Strickland of Grand Prairie.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at First Baptist Church on Tuesday, June 1, 2021 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Grand Prairie, 950 Mayfield Rd. Grand Prairie, TX 75052.
