He grew up in California, and enlisted in the US Army as a young man proudly serving his country. Ross joined the United States Army in October 1966, serving honorably for 3 years. He received medals in Marksmanship (rifle), a Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. He then transferred to the US Army Reserve. He later moved to Texas where he spent his life until his death.
Ross loved to have fun; singing, dancing, and telling jokes. He loved people and would do anything he could to help them. "Oh,and let's not forget Golf!"
Anytime, anywhere, people loved to be in his presence because of his vibrant smile and loving nature.
Ross is survived by his wife, Lillie Dowell, three sisters and one brother, Larry and Judith Sabat, Janet and Mike McNaughton, Mary Lou Tucker, Steve and Linda Marshall, all of California. Six Children: Lea Helms, Guy (Susie) Helms, Laura Lawson, Amanda Helms, Donald Dowell, James (Donna) Arnold. All of Texas. He is also survived by his 14 Grandchildren and 3 Great Grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his father, Ross Jr. Helms, Mother Fern Miller Helms, a brother-in-law and a son-in-law.
