

Judson “Judd” L. Kovalak Sr., age 89, formerly of Comstock Park went to be with the Lord on Saturday evening, September 10, 2016 at Covenant Village of The Great Lakes. He was born in Grand Rapids, MI on June 3,1927. He attended schools in Grand Rapids, graduating from Comstock Park High School in 1945. Following graduation he married his high school sweetheart, Dona Meyer, with whom he spent 62 wonderful years. He was preceded in death by Dona in 2011, his daughter Ann Reay in 2005, and his sister Roxanne Huyser in 1978. He will be missed and his memory cherished by his sons and daughters in law; Judson Jr. (Sam) and Barbara Kovalak and Paul and Susan Kovalak; son in law, Daniel (Sandy) Reay: his 8 grandchildren, Ryan (Dana) Kovalak, Mary (Jeff) Wagner, Theresa (Leo) Urzagaste, Rebecca (Troy) Camarata, Heather (Shane) Jewell, Eric (Caitlin) Kovalak, Elizabeth (Andrew) Clark, David (Jenna) Kovalak; and 11 great grandchildren. Also surviving are his brothers in law; Nevin (Barb) Meyer, and Ken (Sara) Meyer. In Judd’s early years he served as a MI State Police trooper, and a GR city firefighter. He owned several businesses and founded City Sign Erectors of Western, MI in 1961. Judd had an extreme passion for traveling and spent many years exploring by boat on “Drumbeat”, not only the Great Lakes but also the Mississippi River, the Gulf Coast, the Bahamas and the areas of Florida. Following his boating years he transitioned to RV traveling which he did for many more years. Judd was a talented woodworker, building furniture pieces and collectibles for the grandchildren. Judd loved to cook and enjoyed dinners at his house with family and friends, hosting many events over the years. There will be a time of visitation with family Friday evening, September 16, 2016 from 6-9 pm with the Rosary prayed at 8:30 pm at Reyers North Valley Chapel, 2815 Fuller Ave NE, GR, MI 49505. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 17, 2016 at 11:00 am at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church (156 Valley Ave SW, GR, MI 49504) with Fr. Peter Damian officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Sacred Heart Academy.
