On May 20, 2015, Robert E. Hayes, age 89, of Grand Rapids left our world and was reunited with his son, David, and parents, Ed & Bunny Hayes. Those who will continue to embrace Bob in their hearts and memory are: his wife, Viola, and his children, Karen Rosbury (Terry), Steve Hayes, Allen Hayes (Kathy), Matthew Hayes and Stepson, Craig Wallace (Melissa). Bob will be lovingly remembered by his 8 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and his brother Bill Hayes as well as his extended families. Bob lived an adventurous life including raising a family of six with his first wife, Nancy, serving our country during the Korean War, building his medical career and traveling the world with his wife, Viola. Bob knew at a very young age that he wanted to be a doctor and committed himself to achieving that goal. He attended medical school at Northwestern Medical School, completed his internship at St. Luke's Hospital in Chicago and his residency at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. Bob had a private general surgery practice and was on staff at Butterworth Hospital also practicing trauma medicine. The accomplishments that he is most proud of include his 4.0 at UofM, and while on staff at Butterworth: serving as Chief of Staff, Chief of Surgery, his designation as "Resident Teacher of The Year" two years running, and the nickname, Dr. Drape, bestowed on him by the OR nurses. As Bob's medical career progressed, he served as Chief Medical Officer for Raytheon in the South Pacific and Saudi Arabia. Upon his retirement Bob and Viola settled in Florida and then four years ago, moved back to Grand Rapids to be closer to their families. Not only did Bob enjoy practicing medicine, but playing golf was one of his favorite past times. He was particularly proud of his low handicap and 3 holes in-one. Bob had a unique bond with his Great Grandchildren sharing stories of helping Dr. Ball treat the ostriches at the zoo, teaching them the bones of the body, and also how to wiggle their ears. His favorite topics of conversation included his travels, medical experiences, melanocytes and deism (God Bless Him); all of which were sprinkled with his unique sense of humor. Please join us in a Sharing Celebration of Bob's life on Saturday, May 30th at Reyers North Valley Chapel. Visitation will be held from 2:00-3:00pm with a sharing celebration service beginning at 3:00pm.
