OBITUARY

William Mahlon Riley

William Mahlon Riley, 79 of Chase Michigan, formerly of Grand Rapids Michigan, passed away on January 2, 2020. Born on January 27, 1940 in Grand Rapids to Robert and Mary Riley. United in marriage on November 13, 1965 to Lucille Morrissey. Survived by wife of 54 years, Lucille and daughter Katie (Dave) Thorington. Grandchildren; Molly Jo Slagel, Jacob Thorington, Jarrod (Brandy) Thorington, Camron (Jen) Thorington, and 4 Great Grandchildren. Also survived by nephews; Sean Riley, William Riley, Sandor Varaljai, Mahlon Varaljai and brother Robert Riley. Preceded in death by parents Robert (Mary) Riley, and sister Mary Catherine Varaljai. William proudly served his country with the U.S. Army. He was an avid outdoors and fisherman. A longtime member and volunteer for the Am Vets post 1988 and also the American Legion. He had a great sense of humor and loved telling jokes. He will be greatly missed. Memorial Visitation for William will be held on Saturday January 18, 2020, at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 1025 3 Mile Rd NE Grand Rapids, Michigan 49505, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m. Military Honors will be accorded to William by the U.S. Army and the Kent County Honor Guard.

Bill was truly one genuine and delightful guy. He was great at telling stories and jokes that were worth repeating. And he was a terrific fisherman who would readily share his experience. I will miss my brother Lunker Hunter.
