Oliver M Basey

Mr. Oliver Majorie “Sparky” Basey, 80, of Kansas City Missouri died Tuesday January 8, 2019 at Research Medical Center. He was lovingly surrounded by family and friends during his transition into God’s Kingdom.

Oliver Majorie Basey was born on June 6, 1938 to Margaret Townsend and Andrew Basey in Kansas City, Missouri. He was a lifelong resident of Kansas City, with a colorful past.

Oliver proudly served our country as a United States Marine from September 1955 through September 1961. Part of his service time was spent overseas. During his time in the Marines, he completed his USAFI GED.

Oliver’s work history included the United States Postal Service, and also years in construction as master cement finisher.

Part of his life journey included a period of homelessness in the streets of Kansas City. Everyone knew of him because he walked the streets of downtown Kansas City all the time.

Oliver was an avid reader, and had an extensive collection of books, including historical study books of the Bible. He also enjoyed cooking and could made a meal out of just about anything. Oliver also loved music, particularly classical music.

Oliver spent the last eight years of his life in the Life Care Center of Grandview after suffering a massive stroke. Though he was unable to ambulate, he drove his electric wheelchair proudly! Everyone began to call him Uncle Oliver over time.

Oliver’s memory will live on through three sons, Michael Lamont (Angela), Paris Andre and Chad Kenyatta Basey; one daughter, Selina Estelle Basey O’Neal; two sisters, Gayle Avalon Walker and Carol (Bob) Magan; and a special sister in Christ, Brenda Ransburg; four grandchildren, Dela O’Neal and Louis O’Neal, Cali Jordone Basey and Clair Jene’ Basey, and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends as well as the staff at the Life Care Center of Grandview.
