Bernard (Bernie) John Schermer, age 88, peacefully entered his eternal home with his Lord and Savior Thursday, April 11, 2024. Bernie was born in Wright County, Minnesota June 1, 1935 and graduated from Annandale High School, class of 1953 in Annandale, Minnesota. He served his country in the United States Army 31st surgical unit in Germany, and drove for a Lieutenant Colonel. Bernie and his family have resided in West Michigan since 1977.
He was a man who loved God and his family. He loved to laugh and if he had a smirk on his face and glint in his eye you knew he was having fun being a stinker. Even in the final days of fighting vascular dementia, he still found ways to tease those he loved and those that cared for him. He was hardworking, reliable, and trustworthy. He loved working with his hands, whether gardening, home improvement projects, creating new woodworking projects ranging from toys for his grandkids to furniture for his family, and more. He worked as an electrician for over 60 years, retiring in 2005 from Allied Electric in Walker, Michigan. He never sat still for long and enjoyed his time as a building missionary in the years following retirement.
He will be remembered and missed by his wife of 62 years, Shirley (Merryman) Schermer; daughters Janet Waldmiller and Beth (Kevin) Ferguson; grandchildren John Waldmiller, Rick Waldmiller, Jenni (Regan) Schaeffer, and Joshua Ferguson; great-grandchildren Lukas Waldmiller, Bennett and Graham Schaeffer; siblings Norma Plaggerman, Verna Mae VanMaanen, Harvey (Lois) Schermer, Bruce (Dianne) Merryman, Sue (Jerry) Bos; many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and caregivers.
Preceding Bernie in death are his parents John and Tina (Cynthia) Schermer; father- and mother-in-law, Francis and Marge (Marjorie) Merryman; brothers-in-law Ralph VanMaanen and Burt Plaggerman; brother and sister-in-law, Peter and Ardys Schermer; nephew, Jeff Schermer; niece, Cynthia Mallory; and great-nephew, Curtis VanMaanen.
