Donnes "Don" Deters, age 87, passed away on Saturday, May 9, 2026. He was preceded in death by his wife, Susan Deters; and son, Jim Deters. He is survived by his daughter, Carrie (Kurt) Mingerink; daughter-in-law, Susan Deters; grandchildren Brandon (Jessica) Mingerink, Kevin (Paige) Mingerink, Sara (Michael) Herweyer, Andrew Deters, Elli (Austin) Berg; great-grandchildren Brynlee, Aiden, Chase, Avery, and Jaxson; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Don lived an incredibly full and storied life. From the grit of the boxing ring and the intense labor politics of the Teamsters to the discipline of a black belt and the artistry of the bagpipes, he clearly isn't someone who did anything halfway.
He started his working career in 1959 at Barry Steele. He served as a business agent for Locals 299, 339, and 406. His career spanned decades of significant labor history, culminating in his retirement in 2000. Following retirement, he continued to serve the community in the mounted division for Macomb and Oakland counties alongside his horse, CJ. He was a standout athlete who won the Golden Gloves in 1957. He maintained an undefeated professional record of 12-0 before a shoulder injury (bursitis) forced an early retirement from the ring in 1959. Don also achieved the rank of black belt in Isshin-ryū (Ichiro) Karate, demonstrating a lifelong commitment to physical discipline. He was a dedicated bagpiper who performed with the Grand Rapids Pipe Band and the Muslim Temple Shriners, contributing to the rich ceremonial traditions of those organizations.
The most enduring part of Don's story was his 62 year marriage to Susan and the raising of their two children. His grandchildren became the light of his life in later years. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
Private services will be held.
