Gordon Alonzo Race

Gordon Alonzo Race, age 83, went to be with his Lord Friday, June 23, 2023. Gordon was preceded in death by his daughter, Lori Lynn Race (1965); parents Harold and Adrianna Race. He will be remembered by his wife, Shirley Race (Hansen); children Phillip (Susan) Race, Steven (Lori) Race, Thomas (Christine) Race, and John (Katherine) Race; ten grandchildren Amanda (Brett), Kristen, Matthew, Nathan (Cierra), Noah, Emilee (Ryan, fiancé), Gabriel (Kaylah), Morgan, Austin, and Megan; several great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Gordon is also survived by a brother, Kenneth (Yvonne) Race; and sister, Marjorie Straub.

Gordon graduated from Godwin Heights High School in 1957. He enjoyed many hobbies such as drag racing his 1955 Chevy Bel Air in the 60s, camping, CB radio and repair business, and woodworking. Gordon retired from Steelcase in 1997, and enjoyed many of his retirement years at the family cottage on Mullett Lake in Indian River, Michigan.

Visitation with friends and relatives will take place from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 27, 2023 at Cook Funeral Home (West building), 4235 Prairie St. SW, Grandville, MI 49418. A Celebration of Gordon’s Life will commence 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 28, 2023, with visitation one hour prior, at Cook Memorial Chapel (East building).

The family wishes to thank Elara Hospice for the excellent care and compassion they gave Gordon during his final days.
