
He passed away at Luther Home after a lengthy illness with Alzheimer's disease.
Howard was born in Grand Rapids on August 4, 1918, graduated from Grandville High School, then moved to Detroit for 4 years, where he met and later married the love of his life Leona Schulz.
Howard enjoyed the sport of boxing in his youth.
He was quite an entrepreneur in many areas.
He developed land and did excavating work, then later operated a landfill and recycling business.
Howard gave generously of his time to the community, serving on the Grandville School Board for 25 years and the Walker Board of Review for many years, as well as being a charter member of Bethel Lutheran Church.
Howard had a love of engines, motors, and anything mechanical.
He built up and added a paddlewheel to a World War II Navy Landing Craft on which family and friends spent many enjoyable hours.
He was also a successful inventor, selling one of his inventions to Caterpillar Corporation.
But more than all of these accomplishments, Howard will be remembered for the wonderful man he was, generous, just, and fun loving.
His memory will be forever cherished by his family.
Howard was preceded in death by his brother Robert.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years Leona; his children, Karen Jeff Lubbers, Doug Kerri Fenske, Jan Kelley Smith, Patty Fenske, and Linda Fenske; his 11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren; his brother Ken Jo; and sister-in-law Peggy.
The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Bethel Lutheran Church 3655 Wilson with Rev. Glenn Kopper officiating.
The family will meet with relatives and friends on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Cook Funeral Home, Grandville 4235 Prairie St. SW - west building.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or a Charity of Ones Choice.
The family gives special thanks to the staff at Luther Home for their excellent, loving care.
