

James Joseph Elderkin, age 93, went to be with his Lord Wednesday, June 21, 2023. James was preceded in death by his son, William Elderkin; parents Harry and Cecilia Elderkin; and siblings Ron Elderkin, Joyce Blok, MaryAnn Goode, and Ed Elderkin. He will be remembered by his wife, Charlene Elderkin; children Brenda (Bill) White, Kathy Murray, Paul (Mary) Elderkin, John (Renee) Elderkin; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Jim graduated from Grand Rapids Catholic Central, then joined the Army during the Korean Conflict. Following his military service, Jim married Charlene, his wife of 69 years. Jim was a tool maker at General Motors for 43 years where he made many lifelong friends. He enjoyed a fulfilling retirement biking through Europe and New Zealand, as well as numerous other locations. Together, Jim and Char enjoyed traveling and spending winters in Arizona and Florida.
Jim was an avid sportsman who enjoyed shooting skeet and trap competitively at Creston Rod and Gun Club for more than 50 years. He was also a runner who was proud to complete the Old Kent River Bank Run numerous times. Jim has been a lifelong member who served in many roles at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church.
Visitation with friends and relatives will take place from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, June 25, 2023 at Cook Funeral Home (West building), 4235 Prairie St. SW, Grandville, MI 49418. A Celebration Mass of Jim’s life will commence 11 a.m. Monday, June 26, 2023, with visitation one hour prior, at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, 1630 Godfrey Ave. SW, Wyoming, MI 49509. Father Charles Brown and Father Steve Dudek will be officiating. In honor of Jim and in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to San Juan Diego Academy in Wyoming, Michigan, or Faith Hospice.
