VIGLIONE - Mike Viglione, age 47, passed away unexpectedly Sunday morning while doing what he loved most-playing hockey, the fastest game in the world. Mike grew up in East Grand Rapids, attending East Grand Rapids High School, where he was a high school hockey stand out. He went on to play hockey at Michigan State and graduated from Western Michigan University. Since graduating from college, Mike worked as a sales representative for Nichols for over twenty years, where, with his warm and outgoing personality, he developed many lasting friendships. He used to often joke about the “challenges of being a toilet paper salesman.” Mike leaves behind to cherish his memory, his wife of 20 years, Jan Dillard, his son A.J., and his daughter Alex. In addition, he is survived by his mother Marilyn of Garfield Heights, Ohio, and his father the late Joseph Viglione, his brother Joseph Jay of Middlebury, Indiana, his sisters: Chris Selak of Burbank, California, Bernie Colen of Aurora, Colorado, and Grandmother, Eleanor Sunky of Parma, Ohio. He will also be lovingly remembered by his in-laws, Jim and Jackie Dillard of Grand Rapids and all of Jan’s extended family. He devoted his adult life to his family, supporting them through many sports and school activities. He loved coaching and teaching kids to play hockey. As a father, he coached his son’s travel hockey team for 4 years. One of his greatest accomplishments as coach was leading the Grizzlies to the 2000-2001 Pee Wee AA championship. While teaching and coaching, Mike touched the lives of many aspiring young players. Mike continued to play hockey, playing in local men’s leagues at Jolly Roger Ice Rink. In addition to coaching and playing Mike announced for the Jenison High School Hockey Team. With his exuberant and entertaining voice, he became known as, “Mike behind the Mic”. His daughter Alex also held a special place in his heart; he never missed a sporting event and always looked forward to the annual father daughter dances. He had a love for the outdoors and was an avid golfer and fisherman. Mike will be remembered for; his love of family, his zest for life, and his great sense of humor. He loved entertaining and always made everyone feel welcome. A Memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 2700 Baldwin Dr. Jenison. The family will receive relatives and friends Tuesday 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Cook Funeral Home, Jenison, 1889 Baldwin.
