Strawberry Shortcake will always remind me of Uncle Stuie ~ as a child, I remember during the summer months when Mom would make Strawberry Shortcake for dessert, mysteriously Uncle Stuie ALWAYS showed up on these days as he had a delivery in the area so he would join us. I always loved having this dessert for that one reason! Also ~ Not quite as long ago, my Mom (Imogene), my daughter Lauren and I went to visit Uncle Stuie at his apartment and he wanted to go to lunch. This is when he was still driving, and we had the ride of our lives holding on white knuckled to get to his destination ... you see, he had a coupon and it expired after a certain time of day and he wasn't gonna miss out on the savings from that coupon. I will never forget the day me and Lucus went to see grandpa at his condo and I was wearing a new shirt I just had made that said "This Girl Loves Texas" with two big thumbs pointing up and grandpa said "Well then go back there." He was joking (I think) :-) I loved his since of humor. He cracked me up all the time. My Detroit Tigers buddy. I miss you so much grandpa! Stuart is my grandfather. He has been my best friend for my whole life and it is very hard for me to see him leave us but I know he is at peace. Stuart put his faith in Jesus Christ as his Savior and because of that he is now with the Lord in Heaven. To be absent from the body is to be with the Lord. 2 Cor. 5:8 I spent a lot of time with grandpa at his house. We took care of the lawn work together and he taught me how to do things. I would watch him work on the old cars and vans that he had and and I picked up my appreciation of old cars from him. He was gracious enough to let me use his workshop as I got older and he would help me with my projects then too. We had a lot of good times together and they will always be treasured memories. I learned at lot about life from Stuart. He showed me that all people need to be treated with respect and that it is good to be kind and generous when you can. I still have a lot to learn from his life. He was a person to be looked up to. I'm glad that I was able to spend as much time with him as I did. A lot of my summers were spent with him. He was a more dedicated and loving husband to my grandmother than anyone could ever imagine. He was by her side always and he took care of her even past the point when she needed to go to the nursing home. He was at her side every single day to feed her and take care of her. Regardless of what the weather outside was, he always made it to the nursing home to be with her. When grandpa moved into a condo I was happy be the one who was able to take him to church every Sunday. We did this together until he could no longer hear the sermon. At that point I continued to go to his house on Sunday and we would watch church on television and then eat our lunch of pizza followed by pie. It was our tradition together. During the summer we would watch the Tiger games on TV and we had a lot of fun. I am a better person for having known Stuart and I will love him forever. I met Stuart at the Geo. Senior Center. His good friend Mary Fryling brought him to play Bunco. He had fun and we did, too. I also live at Boulder Bluff and when I would walk past his building he would look out and smile and wave. I also enjoyed visiting with him at Allendale Nursing Home. Stuart was a favorite at ANC. We knew when he was coming because he always wore his dress shoes and they clipped against the floor near the nurses station as he propelled his wheelchair. He had a great sense of humor and liked to tease the staff. I'll miss his ready smile and laugh. He would try to stick up for us if he felt another resident was giving us a hard time . I was blessed to get to know Stuart over the last few years - my husband and I visited him at his condo and then at the nursing home. He would kiss me goodbye and ask if my husband minded!
