Thomas J. VanDam, born May 16, 1942, let go of life on earth July 24, 2022, and was led by angels to God. He fought a brief battle with Glioblastoma, an invasive brain tumor, supported along the way by a team from Faith Hospice.
Tom earned a degree in library science, getting his undergrad at GVSU and masters at Western Michigan, taking full advantage of the G.I. Bill. He served in the Army artillery in the early years of Vietnam offensive. Tom’s career was mainly in hospital professional libraries. He retired from the library of G.R. Community College.
He was a charter member of Parkwood Presbyterian Church, with fond memories of the effort to establish a PCUSA church in Jenison. Those who knew Tom saw him give to folks in need. He gave generously to many organizations.
He enjoyed the simple pleasures of Hawaiian pizza, gospel music, rain on the roof, camping, biking with Bill, peanut butter, and pie. Most of all he loved being called Grandpa.
His wife Sandy will miss all they shared over 55 years. Tom and Sandy are so grateful for daughter, Betsy (John) Norton of Jenison and son, Andy (Misty) VanDam of Lonsdale, Arkansas. He treasured his five grandkids and they loved him. He was so proud of them all - Elsie, Charlie, and Henry Norton and the southern kids Austin and Ava VanDam. Tom will be their guardian angel. He will have the best seat in the house to cheer them on. He is also survived by his siblings Norma Eppinga, Harvey VanDam, and Mary Bicknell; along with many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, July 28, 2022 at Cook Funeral Home (West building), 4235 Prairie St. SW, Grandville, Michigan. In lieu of flowers and out of respect for Tom’s philanthropy to so many organizations, we ask that any monetary donations be made in his honor to an organization close to your heart or Faith Hospice. The family welcomes memories and messages in their guest book online at www.cookcaresgrandville.com.
