So sad to learn of Greg's departure.  Greg and I played in bands together during High School and he, essentially, served as my role model in that regard.  We became friends as he helped me to adjust to the changes in my life and later, after high school, he and I traveled extensively with Keith. Greg was typically the initiator and organizer of those adventures.  We also worked together in construction during breaks from school and, again, Greg helped me both obtain the jobs as well as effectively transition into them.  
We lost touch, finally, after we moved to different locations, married and began new lives.  He often talked about intending to learn to fly and become a commercial pilot. It is not at all surprising to learn of his accomplishments later in life.  When Greg set out to do something, it was usually accomplished.  Throughout it all, he obviously enjoyed himself, was a great organizer, and, given that, most likely a great Commodore, too. 
Wherever we went and whatever we did, Greg always made substantial contributions to all involved.  I'm sure he is still being missed.  I'm also sure that he helped ensure that someone was prepared by him to accept some of the responsibilities he left behind.  Thanks Greg!

Finally, I would like to tell you about Greg's golfing ability. Golf, I could care less about anything 

on God's green earth. I tried it and was terrible at it. Tom and Randy always were golf crazy. They would play 

whenever they got the chance. Greg never pursued it as those two did. However, when asked by his two golf 

crazy brothers, he would smile and say golf, sure why not. Then he would give them a sound thrashing on the 

golf course. Randy would always say Greg is a natural when it comes to golf. Tom would always step in close 

and say, well you know he played in high school. Me, I was always the cellar dweller. Under 120 for me was 

a win on a 9 hole course. Well, I sure hate golf.

But, I will always love my family. I will always love and miss my brothers Tom and Greg. I will miss you

guys on most of the rest of my days and I miss all who made the journey ahead of you.


Next, I can only attribute this one to his military training and his family DNA. Once when I was a 

teenager, I went hunting with my grandpa. He would always make sure we had a successful hunt. We would 

look for pheasants, if we did not find any we would switch to rabbits or squirrels. This day we were 

in luck getting some shots at pheasants. Grandpa kicked one up and I have never seen this before or since.

The pheasant flew almost straight up in the air but it was in an ascending spiral. I look at grandpa and 

it looks like he is stirring the air with his Winchester Auto Mag. I watched him trace 1 then 2 circles

in the sky. He is following the flight of the bird the thing was so high it was almost gone from sight. 

I thought the bird had made good its escape. I heard grandpa shoot and that bird folded and dropped like 
a stone. I was in awe of my grandpa that day. Randy and I both tried hunting with that Win Mag, the thing 

weighed a ton. I never hit a thing with it, I could barely lift it to my shoulder. Randy did not do any 

better as I recall. We would be hunting and Greg would be carrying the Auto Mag. He would say there's a bird 

and bang, Greg would drop it. He would hustle over grab the bird and come back with that big smile of his and 

say well, that one didn't get very far. I was always in awe of him and the training he surely got from the U.S. 

military.

Joan, Kindall, Tommy, and Nayvie I am so sorry for your loss. I know your lives will be very
different going forward. I know mine is already.
Well, I will sail as fast as I can over that part. Now, as far as memories I have several. First 

and foremost whenever I wanted to talk to my older brother. The guy would get to whatever level I was

at and look me square in the eye. I could see the love and support that he was showing to me. That 

meant a great deal to me. I also, know, he showed that love and support to everyone he interacted with.


Thank you for streaming the service for those of us who couldn't be there in person. It was a lovely tribute to Greg. My deepest sympathy and condolences to Joan, Kindall and Tommy.

To me, Greg always seemed like a special soul....the kind you don't meet every day and although he was 12 years ahead of me in life, I have many really great memories of him.

Oh, I did the math, I am 17 years younger than Greg. 

I remember one Christmas that we played Hot Potato so much, that we broke one and had to use a second one. What fun!!

I remember Greg coming to Christmas in his uniform. I am 13 years younger than him, so had no idea what he was going through in the service, but he seemed like a grand Hero to me.

Greg was always so kind and caring to me as a child at Christmas.

Greg welcomed me into his Mutineer Fleet 2 and introduced me (a newbie) to the world of racing. And I watched him do the same for countless others and you could feel Greg's enthusiasm and hospitality when sharing his sport. He was a gift to me.

Greg will be so missed.  I knew if Greg and Joan were there it was going to be a good time in all respects.

Joan and family – I’m so very sad to here of Greg’s passing.  As you know Greg was instrumental in introducing me to the Mutineer racing scene at Grapevine - I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.  Shared beers and brats under the tree and the road trip to CO were some of my favorite memories.  Greg’s enthusiasm, competitiveness and leadership was infectious – he will be greatly missed.

Greg and I  were pretty good friends there in Dysart. I spent some time playing Annie, Annie over with him and other kids in the neighborhood.  There was a large building next to alley where we did this. Over the years I kind of lost contact with Greg and to a certain extent the rest of the family. I had contact with Randy and his parents from time to time. These were all good times.

Greg was the first young man I  fell in love with—I was thirteen. When he was born, he and his mom came back home to live while they waited for his dad to return from Japan during WWII. That love continued and was broadened by my family. 
Greg will continue to be loved by all of us in our memories of the years we shared.

I am so very sorry to hear this news of Greg passing. My condolences to Joan and the family. You all are in my prayers. When I think of Greg I think about the sailing and the good times that brought to him and his family. 

So sorry to hear about Greg’s passing. We were classmates all 13 years in Dysart , graduating in 1963.  I remember stopping to visit  you guys in your lawn once when you were living in Cedar Falls. That was probably 40ish years ago and probably the last time I saw Greg. Joan, we extend our condolences to  you and to Greg’s entire family.

I was very sorry to hear of the loss of Greg. Needless to say, he was a favorite classmate, but then all of us pretty much spent K through 12 together and were all pretty close. I’m glad he found so much enjoyment in his sailing. He sure looked great doing his thing! I am glad I got to see Joan, Kindall and him at he time that family picture was taken. RIP, Greg. 

I was saddened to hear of Greg’s passing. He was a great guy and a passionate and very talented sailor. I thoroughly enjoyed competing against him. He was the best sailor on Grapevine Lake.
