Ken Sauer had a full and wonderful life.
After graduating high school, he joined the Navy and was stationed in Jacksonville, Florida. He played on the base basketball team and learned to surf, before being sent to serve in Vietnam. He was proud to have received numerous medals.
He met the love of his life, Sally, while being stationed in San Diego, California. After being discharged, he worked briefly as an auxiliary security officer at the Oakland Memorial Hospital. Then he and his wife Sally moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she worked for United Airlines and he started at Braniff Airlines. He played for Braniff's traveling semi-pro softball team. Growing tired of the cold weather, Ken requested a transfer with Braniff Airlines and they moved to Colleyville, Texas.
After Braniff Airlines demise, Ken went to work for the City of Irving. He worked there for 20 years and retired. He then went to work for the City of Fort Worth for 4 years and retired again. During this time, he restored classic cars ('59 Metropolitan, '60 Falcon Ranchero and 3 Opal GTs) and was an honorary blackbelt in Karate. He volunteered at Karate tournaments for 20 years. He was also very passionate about his German Shepherds. He raised, bred, and trained them. He handled conformation, obedience, and schutzund. He had multiple dogs in police departments, search and rescue, and seeing eye dogs for the blind.
After his wife, Sally, of 42 years passed away he decided that it was time to retire from the dogs and spend more time with the grandbabies, Millie and Nikki.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Sally; sister, Mary Ann Beko; and beloved German Shepherd, Zeus. Ken leaves behind sisters, Terri Minshall and Bobbie Holmgren; brothers, Greg Sauer and Mark Sauer; daughter, Deborah Sauer-Bullis (Gray); and son, Mike Sauer (Debbie).
The family will receive friends Friday, May 7, 2021 starting at 5pm at J. E. Foust and Son Funeral Home, 523 S. Main Street, Grapevine, TX for a Visitation Service in the Chapel. A catered reception will begin at 6pm.
