Lovingly known as Tina, she was born January 15, 1947, in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Joseph C. Ortiz and Mary Macias.
She graduated from Elkhart High School in 1965.
Tina married Mark Francis Geary on April 8,1969. The two first met in South Bend, Indiana. Mark was hitchhiking back to school at Notre Dame, and Tina graciously gave him a ride. The two were married for 51 years, and lived in many places, including Chicago, St. Louis, Southbend, Akron, Amersham, Houston, and Louisville. They eventually settled in Southlake, Texas. Mark Geary passed away on February 16, 2020.
Tina and Mark loved to travel and went on countless cruises exploring the world. Some of their favorite places were Ireland, China, Egypt, Germany, and Russia. They especially loved visiting Mexico, The Caribbean, and Alaska. Tina enjoyed collecting artwork from their travels, and befriending local artists along the way.
Tina was always an avid volunteer, serving as a lead for her church’s food pantry for many years. She also gave back to her community through the adopt an angel program and putting together holiday packages for Mark’s Meals-on-Wheels families.
When Tina’s beloved next-door neighbors were both diagnosed with cancer, she jumped into action, making them food and care packages. They often spoke of being comforted by Tina’s “miracle onion soup.” Her and Mark adopted the couple’s dog Molly when they passed.
Tina had a deep love of dogs, especially her beloved former pets, Dusty, Mia, Lilly, Molly, and Cody.
Cooking was another passion of Tina’s. She loved gathering her family around the dinner table for her signature Beef Stroganoff, Lasagna, and Spaghetti and Meatballs. She always claimed that cooking was easy, and that “anyone who can read can cook,” but her meals were always something special.
Tina was known to her grandchildren as “Nana” and loved spending time with them. A sign has adorned her kitchen for 20 years, stating “Nana’s kitchen, where grandchildren are spoiled, and memories are made.”
