Gordon was born Jan. 31st 1929 in Syracuse, NY and spent most of his childhood in the small hamlet of Nedrow, New York. He joined the US Navy in 1945, where, through the work of the USO, he met his sweetheart Ms. Anne McGuckin (Later Mrs. Smith). He and Anne moved throughout the country before settling in Texas in 1961.
Gordon and Anne were blessed with a large family, raising seven children. He loved the sport of golf and devoted his time to it whenever possible. He was a supporter of the arts, a lover of music and a man of faith. Gordon was involved with the building of two schools and a country club, even serving as president of Rolling Hills Country club on occasion. He had long friendships with the clergy and parishioners involved with St. John the Apostle Catholic Church and School. Friendships which, in many cases, continue through generations.
He lived a very long and sometimes tragic life with dignity, grace, and classic style. He had a generous spirit and his bright-eyed smile lit up any room. Although a quiet man, from the office, to the country club or the dive bar he effortlessly commanded the room. Gordon loved being around children, particularly his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He would entertain them with singing and rhymes, long running fibs about morning jogs, and used the same nickname for everyone (Mergatroid McGowski).
He is preceded in death by his wife, Anne Smith, his daughter Janice Smith, his son Gregory Smith, and his infant son Michael Smith. He is survived by his Brother, Charles Palmer and his wife Kay, his sons Steve Smith, Jeff Smith and Rick Smith, his daughters, Cynthia Smith Anderson and Patricia Smith. He had 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews throughout New York and Texas. He was blessed with a long life, and we are blessed that he shared much of it with us.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” – Matthew 11:28-30
