Samuel (Sam) George Hill of Southlake, Texas died peacefully on September 6, 2021. He was born in Big Spring, Texas to Lila Faye Blanton and Paul Hill on January 3, 1952. His mother, Faye, died when Sam was only nine months old, so he was raised for much of his life by his aunt Mildred Blanton and uncle Leonard (Blow) Morgan. Sam graduated from Cohoma High School (Texas) in 1970 and went to New Mexico Military Institute, after which he enlisted in the U.S. Army, receiving an honorable discharge as a First Lieutenant on June 5, 1983.
In 1972 he married Debbie Hanagan and they had two girls, Mandy and Erin. He also attended University of New Mexico, graduating in May 1975. For years Sam worked in the oil and gas business as a landman, traveling all over the U.S. securing leases and eventually managing drilling sites in New Mexico. In 1983 he met Barbara Hoffman, and they married in 1985. After living in El Paso, Texas for a number of years, they moved to Dallas in 1988 where Barbara worked, and they had two boys – Matthew and James (“Jamie”).
In 1987, Sam found his life’s passion while working on his own sobriety – addiction treatment counseling. He received a Master’s in Psychology in December 1991 from the University of North Texas and started his counseling career at Twin Lakes Hospital in Denton. For the next 27 years Sam worked in various treatment centers and outpatient clinics helping those struggling with addiction, depression, family matters, and other mental illness to find faith, hope, healing, and wellness. As a man living 34 years in recovery before going to rest, he had a true gift for understanding people and their struggles.
Sam loved to hunt, fish, and play golf. He had a passion and skill for woodworking and jewelry-making, and could repair anything. Sam had a gift with animals and a special love for horses and dogs, breeding Labradors for many years. He was a natural horseman and loved to play polo when he was younger. Most of all he loved his children and grandchildren, coaching, playing baseball and other sports with them, never missing a game.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara, his daughters Mandy Ogan and Erin Holsonback, his sons Matthew Hill and James Hill, and his grandchildren, Logan Holsonback, Parker Holsonback, Nash Hill, and Wyatt Hill and extended family.
The Hill family ask that donations be made in Mr. Hill's name to:
