I just thought of Mr. Love today and googled out of curiosity. He left a strong impression on me. I never even actually had a class with him, yet somehow he was always well-known and well-liked by me and my friends. He struck was a consummate educator, even never having directly having had a lesson from him. All you had to do was talk to him to know. Even if at times we got a little frustrated being told, "Because 'Y' is a crooked letter, and pigs don't whistle, and meatballs don't bounce!"  He's remembered, very fondly, even at this late date.

I was fortunate to have Mr. Love for both 9th grade science and physics. He contacted me about 10 years ago when I was living in Japan because he was involved in a project with Japanese education. I now teach a few college classes and try to emulate some of his mannerisms which made me so comfortable over 50 years ago. He was the first person to call me Mr. Frohlich. He was the finest teacher I ever had.

Mr. Love was both my ninth grade science and twelfth grade physics teacher. His excellent method of teaching has positively influenced the lives of many students. He was the best teacher I ever had.

1969 Physics, Great Neck North.  One of the most personable, approachable, understanding, generous and compassionate compassionate high school teachers in Great Neck.  He gave every senior an "A" in the last quarter to send them off on a positive note.  I never actually took the final exam, so I know all the seniors received an "A" grade.  He made our world a better place.  RIP

Even social studies and Spanish were my strongest subjects, Mr. Love was such an extraordinary and gifted teacher I look back on his classes with immense pleasure.  Mr. Love and I kept in touch nearly to the end of his life.  We spoke whenever he came to Washington, DC.  I am grateful to have had him as a teacher and friend.

Mr. Love inspired me to live my life for a greater purpose. My moto in life as given to me by Louis Love " Mr. Nelkin you are no Barginium." 
I spoke to him about a year ago. It was a wonderful experience.
I have spoken about him and shared those great times with friends...except maybe SpittenWillie.

My most memorable teacher through all levels of education and the reason I was a physics major on college before going on to med school. Creative, inspiring, demanding, engaged, committed--the quintessential teacher in every way.

Mr. Love was my homeroom and physics teacher in 64-65. Although I got a lousy grade from him, I learned how to inspire and influence people when they don't want it. His style of teaching set the bar high for all who followed. He knew he had one of the tougher subjects to teach and he took it upon himself to make it as interesting  as possible. I can still hear his voice reaching a crescendo when asking an unsuspecting student the answer to his difficult question. What a remarkable teacher. RIP.

Lew Love was an inspiration, helping to fuel my love for science and my career as a science writer. He taught me about precision, respect, and lots and lots of physics. When I wrote science articles for children, I interviewed him about the physics of baseball and countless other topics. Now, working at Brookhaven National Laboratory, a world-class physics research institution right here on Long Island, I have thought of him often and wish I'd had a chance to speak with him again about my current work. His legacy will live on in all those he touched.

At Lewis Love's funeral today, I learned so much about his incredible career that influenced so many people.....I enjoyed the brief discussions we had over the years...I will try to continue my work - as a memorial to all that he did - to bring the joy of science to the masses......he was truly an extraordinary teacher, mentor, scientist, family man and friend to so many....May he Rest In Peace. He will be remembered...fondly!!!

We did not know Lewis but spent a lot of time with his son Addison.  Addison is one of the most literal people we have ever met and we can only imagine this was in part due to his dad, Lewis.  Our cousin Keith Kleinick was a student of Lewis's and always had good things to say about him and we figure this is why he turned out such a fast on his feet son!  All our blessings go out to the family and as we are in Rochester, NY we are unable to make it for a shivah call, but please know if we did I would certainly be wearing my outfit!

I did not know Lewis Love but knew his son Addison very well, in fact we lived together for a few years!  Addison was one of the most literal people I ever met and I can imagine this came from his father being one of the best teachers in Great Neck.  And how do I know that, because my Cousin Keith Kleinick spoke very highly of him as Lewis was his high school Physics teacher.  All our thoughts and prayers go out to the Love family.  We are in Rochester, NY so we can not make a Shiva Call, but please know if we could I would be wearing my outfit!

My condolences to his family.  America has lost a unique individual who was able to share his love of learning, discovery and science with his students.  He made the initially byzantine world of physics logical and fascinating.  I spoke with him telephonically a few years ago to briefly catch up and to let him know that his thoughts were still valued in my life these many years after the 1963-64 school year.

I can only hope to treat my students as well as Lew Love treated us.  Though he did condemn me to my share of donkey dust and Gowanus canal water.  I last corresponded with Lew about a year ago and he was as enthusiastic as ever to get real science taught.  Lew, we miss you.

In cultures around the world the most honorific titles are teacher, professor and doctor. Lewis Love opitimized the best of his most honored profession. Generations of students benefitted from from his knowledge, enthusiasm and kindness. His passion for teaching was an inspiration to all who were privileged to be in his class. His humanity touched all who knew him. My condolences to his family.

Mr. Love has stood alone as my inspiration throughout my 36-year teaching career.  He was not only blessed with” great perspicacity and innate intellectual ability,” but he was truly “a gentleman and a scholar.”  If I've had any success at all, it's because my students have benefitted from the passion for his craft that Mr. Love passed on to me.  I can only hope to leave the kind of mark he left on all of us fortunate enough to have known him.

Amazing how a great teacher stays with you for life. Mr. Love had a rare ability to connect with students. When he taught he drew everyone in, then he would punctuate a good lesson with the silly line "Save the bones for Henry Jones, 'cause he don't eat no meat" which somehow tied it all together. Those words have stayed in my mind, along with Lew Love's exuberance in presenting the lesson.

I had Mr Love as my teacher twice. In 9th grade he came down to the Jr High School and taught general science, and then in 12th grade I took his physics course. An amazing guy. He had undergone one of the early heart surgeries, which he described to us in class in detail. Thirteen years later, during my cardiology training, learning the history of cardiac surgery, I realized he'd had a "Vineberg" procedure (no longer done) and thought of him immediately. He was impassioned and memorable, and touched all of us lucky enough to know him. Class was always fun and his impact on me was powerful.

My brother Peter ('72) just informed me of Lewis Love's death and noted the remarkable tributes contributed to this Guest Book. We both remember Mr. Love as a unique educator and an extraordinary man. No other teacher made such a lasting impact on me. He reveled in challenging students to think. And he was aptly named. Under the respectful formality he maintained in his classroom – always employing our surnames with the courtesy title "Mr" or "Miss" – he loved teaching and he loved his pupils. During my visits to his home in the years after graduation, we became Lewis and Mark. He shared warmth and affection, along with his unquenchable curiosity about the universe. I might have become a scientist even without his influence, but he certainly made me strive to become a better researcher, a better teacher, and a better person. Lewis Love attributed his own astonishing energy to experimental surgery that dramatically improved his coronary circulation. Whatever the cause, he had as great a heart as anyone I have known.

Think about the impact he made on the world! Yes the world. All of the scientific breakthroughs by his students and his student's students!!  Of course he was my favorite teacher ever.

Mr. Love inspired excellence in all who had the privilege and honor to be in his class.  I most remember entering that hallowed room and marveling at the brisance of multi-colored graphics he would lovingly and meticulously commit to the blackboard.  Still resounding reboantly in my mind, even 50 years later, his humorously delivered bons mots: 

“Save the bones for Henry Jones ‘cause he don't eat no meat.
“Mr.______, you are a gentleman and a scholar and there aren't many of us left.
“Mr.______, open the window ‘cause it's going to get hot in here.

He taught with an inimitable style, bursting with brio, verve and enthusiasm.  It was contagious and infected all in his class.  For me, that experience was never to be emulated, not even close, in my subsequent undergraduate and graduate career in academia.  He had the ability to instill in his students an irrepressible and inextinguishable desire to learn and excel.  I shall never forget a poignant moment in his senior physics class.  Having submitted the end of year science notebook, he took me aside a few days later and said, “Mr. Grauer, it just doesn't get better than this.  Can I keep this notebook.”  It was a kairos moment for me, one that has remained and cherished not only through my academic career, but throughout my entire life.  I had the opportunity to return that brevet at my 25th class reunion in 1987, an event that Mr. Love attended.  Chatting affectionately with him I said, “Mr. Love, your class…it never got better than that.”   Rest in peace, my friend and mentor, your indelible lessons in the academy of learning and life shall never be forgotten.

Mr Love was a unique educator and a unique person.  His love of teaching and his love and respect for his students was so obvious.  But what I remember most are not his classes, but the prep room behind his classroom, where all the interesting equipment was, and where Mr Love became an inspiration and role model to those of us lucky enough to hang out there.

Mr. Love took joy in teaching, and imparted to us joy in learning. He was a truly wonderful, caring educator with a unique style that made him my favorite teacher.  I will miss him.

Lewis! The best teacher, we all say, but also a good man. Yes, I became a physicist, but his personal and ethical advice stuck as well, and gave me a great standard and a human model. What's the right memorial for this guy, who "was a bargain!"

It is said that it "only takes one teacher".  Mr Love was that teacher who with his enthusiasm, dedication and wisdom lit the fires of my scientific curiosity at Great Neck Jr. High School. Nearly 60 years later, I and my brothers still remember this fine individual.  Thank you Mr Love.

Long Island has lost a great teacher and a fine human being.   Lewis Love was the best science teacher I ever had.  His classes were brilliant, he made himself readily available for extra help, and he radiated kindness and concern.  His legacy spans decades and hundreds of students, many of whom have had prominent careers in science across the U.S.  Though it's been over 50 years, I vividly remember him and his teaching.   He will be missed.   My condolences to his wife, Anita, and the rest of the Love family.

Mr. Love was an idol for many of the Class of 1963 at Great Neck North Senior High School.  His enthusiasm, his ability to transmit a sense of wonder at the beauty of physics, and his personal involvement with his students inspired many of us in a variety of fields.  After years of college and graduate school, many of us still refer to Mr. Love as the best teacher we ever had.

Always a "gentleman and a scholar," Mr Love was my science teacher in the mid-1950's. I will always remember his kindness and wisdom. My condolences to his family.

Great teachers are the most valuable of all people. Lew Love was the epitome of a great teacher. Because of him, I became a physicist, and my career has been as wonderful as his class was, way back in 1959-1960. Thank you Lew!

Possibly the best teacher I ever had and a major influence on me and generations of students in Great Neck. He made it a pleasure to come to class. His enthusiasm for the subject matter and the attention he paid to his students and his craft are legendary.

I want to extend my condolences to the entire Love family.  The world has lost a great man and a kind soul whose legacy spans well beyond his immediate family.  It has been 30 years since I had him as a teacher and yet his words of wisdom and guidance remain a daily influence.  He will be missed but never forgotten.

He was, quite simply, the best teacher I had in High School.  His kindness, humor, and love of science had a profound and lasting influence on me.  First leading me to be a physics major, but ultimately instilling and nurturing a rational approach to thinking about problems that has stayed with me to this day, 31 years after I left his class.  I can still hear him saying "Save the bones for Henry Jones 'cause he don't eat no meat!".  Today we save the bones for an extraordinary teacher!

A wonderful teacher, a kind friend....and a superb ediucator of children!  He left both a mark on students' lives ind in the world of asteroids!!!!!!!

What an incredible person, teacher and influence Lewis Love had on my life and those in my GNS Class of 1983.  While we are in midst of planning our 30th reunion this spring our class was just discussing what an incredible influence Lewis Love had on our lives today. For me personally, he was so incredibly encouraging when discussing my proposal for a Westinghouse project and kept encouraging my love of science.  It was no wonder that while under his watch, GNS was always ranked as one of the top public High Schools in America.  He will be greatly missed and we will honor him this spring at our 30th Reunion.
