Charles D. “Papa” Matthews of Greeley died Dec. 30, 2010, at Medical Center of the Rockies. Charles was born June 12, 1921, in Carroll, Mo., to Oscar W. and Rosa May (Miller) Matthews.
Charles served in the U.S. Navy as a CSF petty officer during WWII. He served on the U.S.S. New Orleans and in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Charles was married to his wife, Janice Matthews, for 39 years. He was employed with Operating Engineers Local No. 9 for 62 years. Charles was a lifetime member of the VFW, Post 6624, and he was also a BPOE Elks member. “Papa” took great pride and joy in his grandchildren.
Charles is survived by his wife, Janice; three sons, Jerry Raines (Denise) of Pendleton, Ore., Jim Matthews (Julie) and Jack Matthews (Kellie), all of Greeley; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He is preceded by his parents and a son, Gary Matthews.
Graveside service is 1 p.m. Wednesday at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
