He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, BJ Ledyard Callahan, daughter Lesley Switzer, husband Steve and grandsons Max and Ian; daughter Sidney Callahan; brother Gary Callahan, wife Jeanne, nephew Clint Callahan, wife Monique and their children Conor and Benjamin; niece Keli Callahan, husband Jeffery Erickson and their children Danica and Gavin; and sister Karla Callahan, husband Darrel Mank and their son, Zachary.
Dan attended Lead High School in South Dakota and recently helped organize their reunion; he spoke often of how much he enjoyed reconnecting with everyone. He studied engineering at the South Dakota School of Mines in Rapid City, where he was a member of Theta Tau and sang with The Singing Engineers. He went on to work as a mechanical engineer in the computer industry in Montreal, Minnesota, and New Hampshire, retiring in Windsor, Colo.
Dan’s philosophy was, “if they can make it, I can fix it.” He was a hard worker and a true craftsman, leaving behind a legacy of building projects from a log cabin he hand-built with friend Fred Mihelich in the back woods of Minnesota, to a work-of-art basement remodel of their Windsor home, to a goose blind project on the Colorado plains with Jon Ainslie.
He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and nature lover, spending countless hours planning new outdoor adventures. He was loyal and valued his friendships, always willing to lend a helping hand. Dan was a generous person who always put family first. He was an avid reader and lover of history and a legendary storyteller. He will truly be missed.
Celebration of Life services will be at 4 p.m. Monday, Dec. 29, at Allnut Funeral Home, 2100 North Lincoln Avenue, Loveland, CO 80538.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Project Self Sufficiency (www.ps-s.org) whose goal is to help single parents realize their dreams for financial independence. This was the organization for which Dan volunteered repairing cars for single parents.
