I would expect nothing less from Dave than to fight up until the end. We can all learn from his fighting spirit!

Dave, thanks so much for the wonderful photo of Dave doing what he loved so much.  And for the memory of your first ride with him .... i did not remember that he had started on a mountain bike.

Thanks for the reminder, Dave. I'd forgotten about that early connection you had with Dave when he was considering switching from mountain to road bikes. That ride you had with him came after the time I road up the Glen Haven switchbacks with him - me on my road bike, him on his mountain bike. He was always a great competitor.

I'm saddened to hear that Dave has passed away. I always thought of him as a gifted and disciplined athlete, and I thought that if anyone could beat cancer, it would be Dave.

I first met Dave years ago when his brother Paul asked me to go for a ride with Dave and answer his questions about road cycling. I believe Dave had been primarily a runner before that time. I met Dave near his house, and had ridden about 25 miles to get there. He was on a mountain bike, and I was on a road bike. I thought that since he was new to cycling and on a mountain bike, I would be waiting for him. But I didn't know what a gifted athlete he was, and I soon found that not only was I not waiting for him, I was working hard to match his speed. Soon after that, when I saw Dave on various group rides on a road bike rather than a mountain bike, I found it impossible to keep up with him. He was a gifted athlete and trained with discipline, with the result that he was soon very fast. I respected his abilities, but I respected his discipline and motivation even more.

My condolences to Paul and the rest of Dave's family. He will be missed.

Jonathan, thank so much for sharing your memory of my brother Dave.  I stopped cycling some years ago, so never had the chance to ride with him, but there is no question he would have left me in the dust.

It reminds me of my time with him - I rarely was able to stay with him on the way up either!  You're right - he loved to be on his bike in the mountains.  That's a good way to remember him.  -- Paul

My condolences to Dave's family.
Dave and I raced together at the Mount Evans race in 2016 - his first race for the Rio Grande team.  We didn't stay together long, though, as I can not go uphill as fast as he could.  He waited for me at the top and we enjoyed the long winding descent together.
That was the last time I saw Dave. We emailed though, and I learned of his illness and he kept me updated about his condition.
I never saw Dave when he was sick, so I will instead gladly remember him from that day -
 happy and healthy and enjoying a bike ride in the mountains.

I am so sorry to hear this sad news about Dave's passing. I send my warm thoughts and prayers to Dave's family and friends at this difficult time. I hope that your fond memories of good times will provide some comfort. Dave's passion for cycling and life was intense and inspirational. I remember seeing him on his bike starting the climb to Pinewood Reservoir, called Rattlesnake by many cyclists, as I descended after my last hill repeat one day, probably about a a year and a half ago. He had started chemo treatments and was getting out for a little ride, trying to keep his fitness until he could get back to the long climbs he loved. I checked in with him periodically over the months that followed to see how things were going. He was always matter of fact and positive. The last report I received from him was around Thanksgiving 2017. He was headed to Houston for immunotherapy, and I was going to California to visit my family. We would be at DIA/DEN the same day and I wondered whether we could meet up while we were there. The timing didn't work out and that opportunity was lost. He was hopeful about the immunotherapy, but I guess the treatment didn't work so well enough for him. Damn! I hope he can climb as long as he wants every day where he is. Rest in peace, Dave.

My thoughts are with you during this very difficult time. We will miss Dave on the Sunday group rides. He was strong athlete and spirit.
