

Donald Spencer Girnt, 90, of Greeley, Colorado passed away on November 5, 2017 at Ashley Manor in Evans, CO. Don was born on April 1, 1927 in Denver to parents Henry and Grace (Spencer) Girnt. He graduated from Englewood High School and afterwards attended Police Academy and served for 25 years as a Colorado State Trooper. Don married Barbara Jeanne Carter in 1964 in Greeley, Colorado. Don also served as the Eaton Police Chief for 5 years and was an Instructor for a time at the Police Academy. In 1961 Don was the first emergency responder as a State Trooper to the horrific “Crossing” accident between a school bus and train in the Greeley area. He attended the funerals for all of the children who lost their lives in the accident and the memory of the accident stayed with him for the rest of his life.
Don was a Free Mason. His favorite past times included travelling, watching western movies, rodeos, listening to country music, reading and model trains. He was a very handy man, fixing and building numerous things. Don was an animal lover, especially loving his dogs. He also loved new cars.
He is survived by three sons, John S. Girnt of Phoenix, AZ, Donald Bruce Girnt of Coos Bay, OR, and Glenn Sutton of Prescott, AZ; grandchildren Sean Adams, Shelby Girnt, Austin Girnt, and Richard Girnt; one great-grandchild Kennedy Adams; daughter in-law Susan Gill Adams of Lone Tree, CO; and his special friends Mark and Peggy Crates of Aurora, CO.
Don is preceded in death by his wife Barbara; sons Jeffrey Karl Adams and Greg S. Girnt; and his parents.
A Memorial Gathering will be held at the Allnutt Macy Chapel on Friday, November 24, 2017 at 2:00 PM.
