Dear Horse,
You always had to be number one . . . thru the S curves, skiing at Teton Village, intramural sports, graduating HS at age 16.  You were my best friend, my quarterback, my idol, my best man, my confidant.  Your trips to Alaska were too infrequent and short, but you got to experience a small portion including Intricate Bay, the Chuitt, Klutina River and Lake Louise.  I miss you man!  And, I know the Beta Sigs and the Frogs will miss you too.  So, I'll see you on the great river in the sky.  And, if we have a free weekend, maybe we can split another one like we did at FHDC.

I was and remain a friend of Jim. I used to live in Fort Collins and played a lot of tennis with Jim. Although I have not seen him since 1998, he remained and always will remain in my mind as a good person and a good friend. My condolences to his family.

Dear Mrs. Horstman and children,
I am an RN with PVH and overcome with grief in the passing of this wonderful man Jim.  By reading this quest book I can see that he has touched so many lives like he touched mine. I worked with him on the Orthopedic Unit and he performed several surgeries on my father.  Dr. Hortstman showed so much compassion for my father, not only because he was his patient, but also because he was a WWII vet. Dr. Horstman wanted to buy my father a book from Tom Brocka about the war and I could tell that he felt compelled to sit for hours to talk with Dad about his experiences. I was so touched by his nature and presence, the respect he gave me and his ""knuckle hand shakes"". I am truly torn by his passing! Mrs. Horstman, you are a very lucky woman to have a history with him and to have been loved by him sooo much, I'm sure you count your blessings of the time you had to-gether.  I met you when Jim was in the hospital on the Onc. unit, a few of us ""ortho"" nursing were going crazy to see him. You both allowed us to come in and give him love. As I hugged him he layed his head on me and let me rub LOVE to his head. He absorbed our love for him and thanked us. Thank you for allowing us to share our love to the both of you. My dad and I were lucky to be in the office his first day back from surgery, he gave us warm hugs and we shared tears, really only I was crying, Jim just smiled and enjoyed the thoughts. 
We were all so blessed by a man like him, and we are lucky to have your children to carry on his legacy.

Although I didn't get to work with Dr. Horstman for very long, during the time I was employed at OCR it was indeed a pleasure. I did transcription of his office notes and surgical reports. What a nice, caring, kind-hearted man! I shall always remember his beautiful smile! I will also remember that whenever there was something he wanted to spell that started with an ""E"", he always said ""that's E, as in Ellen""! He truly loved his wife and family. We were very sorry to hear of Dr. Horstman's passing.  He did a duel knee replacement on Bob on May 25, 2005 and did a perfect job.  Dr. Horstman was a wonderful, caring person--the very best.  He will be missed by many.

In 1991, Dr. Horstman fixed my ACL, for which I will be forever grateful.  He was a wonderful surgeon and person.

I only had one experience with Dr. Horstman but I will never forget it as he was a wonderful person. He operated on my knee one day and it is perfect and it was perfect right after he operated. Such a kind man and he will be missed geatly.

Dr. Horstman will be missed by many. Always a smile and such a great talent. The PVH ER will always appreciate the kindness he brought to each of us and each of the patients he came to help. So sorry for the loss of a great man.

I just wanted to say that Dr. Horstman will be truly missed. He was our team doc at CSU when I first started as an assistant athletic trainer at the tender age of 23. He was always so respectful to me and treated me as a professional. I learned so much from him in those first few years under ""FRED."" He is a truly caring man and I am glad to say that I knew him. I was lucky enough to see him a few weeks before he passed away....he looked great and was actually on his way in to play tennis at Miramont. I am glad that he got to live like Dr. Horstman likes to live right up until the end. God bless the Horstman family and my thoughts and prayers go out to you.

Jim was truly one special man.  I will always remember his kind words and calm spirit.  It was a privilege to know him. I will miss his beauitful smile !!

Dr. Horstman was a man that truly brought opportunity, strength, and motivation to my life.  My first encounter with him was in High School, when I blew out my knee while doing pre-season drills for baseball at Rocky Mountain High School.  By the time I had last seen him, he had completely rebuilt my left knee and done other surgeries to correct many things.
Dr. Horstman enabled me to accomplish my greatest physical feat to date:  the Habitat 500, which ended up being 575 miles in 7 days.  I wrote him a thank you and sent a picture to show him what his work and encouragement had done for me.
Dr. Horstman will certainly be a legacy in our family and I wish his family the best in healing from such a loss.

I only knew Jim because he operated on my arm to fix a bicep tendon and heard of his fishing skills through mutual friends. Jeanne and I have spent the past few days reflecting on times we shared with Jim. I worked with Dr. Horstman at the CSU Health Center - I'm an x-ray tech.  He was always pleasant and easy to work with.  I'm very sorry for your loss.

As a nurse, I have worked with Dr. Horstman for about 30 years at PVH and OCR.  He had an infectious smile and was one of the kindest and respected physicians I have met in my nursing career.  He treated all with respect and made people feel as if what they had to say was the most important thing of the day.  His skills as a surgeon were excellent. I was very sad to hear the news of Dr. Horstman's passing.  I worked with him as an RN at PVH for 10 years and he was an excellent Orthopedic surgeon.  He also did surgery on my mother's shoulder and she had only great things to say about him. I'm sorry for your loss.

I worked with Dr. Horstman at OCR for several years.  We did road cycling (my forte)on several occasions.  I was training for racing, but Dr. Horstman could always push me on the hills just because he was such a natural athlete. Once, he finally talked me into going mtn. biking. I was apprehensive, but he assured me we'd only be on ""easy fire roads"" and loaned me your non suspension mtn.bike since I didn't even own one. ""You'll be OK without suspension"" he said with that wry grin of his.  He and Dr. Coupens took me up to Horstooth park and we began climbing (which I did without problem).  But we just kept going up to the microwave tower and then he and Dr. Coupens went screaming down in descent.  I was dragging my foot and hanging on for dear life since I had no descending skills (nor, as I then realized, suspension to keep me from beating up my wrists).  When we got to the bottom, Dr. Horstman and Dr. Coupens were just laughing at my distress since they both had the technique (and suspension) to just descend like maniacs.  I came home and iced my wrists.  It was the only time I ever mountain biked.
Ellen:  I enjoyed working with him.  He's a great guy.  It was always good to see him smiling and he was very approachable when dealing with patient care. Whenever I heard him say your name,I just got this sense of his affection for you in the way he said it.  I know you'll miss him. I won't be able to make the service tomorrow, but my thoughts are with you and your family.

What a great doc.  Definitely one of our favorites.  Just after returning to PVH after 11 years, I was assigned as his circulator in the OR.  I was setting up his arthroscope when he had me turn up the speed of the saline infusion and proceeded to squirt me from head to toe!  He was always in a good mood and we loved him for it.  He will be forever missed.

I am an OR nurse at PVH and worked with Dr Horstman for 5 years. While I did not know him well, I loved to talk about sports with him. He told me about the marathon he ran during residency. He was always kind to ask what next adventure I had next. I remember after his surgery, he came to the OR and the first thing he asked me was what crazy race I was going to do next.It made me laugh! Dr Duncan, Dr Durbin and 4 others, including myself, completed the Wild West Relay (a 195mi relay run to Steamboat)  just after he asked me that question. I gave him my finishing shirt, knowing he would have loved to have been part of our team. We all thought of him often in those 36 hrs of running. He touched a lot of people.

I am so sorry to learn of Dr Horstman's passing.  He did my ACL surgery in 1993 and I am pleased to say this is the only time I had to use his services.  I have constantly referred others with knee problems to him.  Although my surgery was conducted 14 years ago, I still remember that he treated me with the utmost respect and was very effective in communicating information to me. He left an everlasting impression on a patient.  I am certain that his family was blessed with his kindness and humor often.  Hold tight to these sweet memories.  He is smiling down on you and you will see his smiling face again.

Dear Ellen, Ashley and Colin, 
We are very sorry for your loss.  I worked with your father for 7 1/2 years at OCR in the operating room; he tought me a great deal and became a good friend.  I will miss his knuckle hits, dry tuna sandwiches with a Mountain Dew!  His greatest stories were of his family and fly fishing.  My husband Bob shares the same Wyoming connection with your dad.  He will be missed very much.  You are all in our thoughts and prayers.
