Jean & Family: I was very sorry to hear about Jack. I first met him in 1948 as a student at Penn State.  At that time he had a small desk in a reagent closet in one of the labs. The most notable feature of that ""office"" was a beat-up old typewriter that should have been retired years before. My last association was at CRS in the 1980's. During that time my office was next door to his. He was a man for all seasons, always ready to pitch in and help out.

We were sorry to hear of your lose.  It was great getting to know Jack the years we played squash together.  Having read of his many accomplishments it is no wonder at his age he could still beat me.  In learning of his extensive life I think more of his gentleness and humility of who he was.

To the family of Jack Schanz:
It is with deep sadness that I learned of Jack??Ts death.  He was a mentor to many of us in the Congressional Research Service, especially those of us involved in mining and mineral issues.  I am particularly indebted to him for intervening on my behalf with management regarding a report on federal coal leasing.  Without Jack??Ts endorsement, the report would have been buried by then-division management.  He understood and appreciated its merits to members of congress.  Unfortunately, I never got to know him personally but, in large part, it was because he was always moving at warp speed.  So, when you said something to Jack, you wound up talking to the void where Jack had been just a moment before.  I hope you will take comfort in knowing how highly respected he was in the professional community.

We were saddened to learn today of Jack's death, and send our sympathy and condolences to Jean and rest of his family. Jack was a special person. He will long be remembered as an earlier pioneer of the discipline of mineral economics. Those of us who followed the path he made in this field will also remember him for all the enthusiastic and kind support he gave us over the years.

I'll always remember Jack Schanz for the wonderful and warm conversations- full of intelligence and lots of humor.  He will be dearly missed.

Jean and family, our sincere condolences. It was great to know Jack, play cards, and work on library improvement. We enjoyed him and am sorry about his passing.

My late husband, Skip Berents, held Dr. Schanz in such high esteem through his contact at Penn State.  I'm sure he was the reason Skip got through college and began a successful career in the financial business.  Not only did Skip keep in touch but Dr. Schanz introduced us to his wonderful Grand daughter Lisa Sweeney Taylor when she came to Boston for graduate work.  It was a pleasure to get to know the whole family through Lisa.  I am truly sorry for your loss.  Billie Berents

To Jack's family- My father, George Dischinger, was at Center Rehab in July and August 2009 where he met Jack. Jack's pleasant demeanor and interesting life experiences lifted my father's spirits and I was grateful to Jack during my father's final days. My thoughts are with you.

We were sad to see Jack's death notice in the paper today and send condolences to his family. In five decades of association, Jack was always a source of wisdom, good advice, and kindness. This started with my first days as a Penn State faculty member and continued long after he moved elsewhere. He was a pioneer in our field of Mineral Economics and will be greatly remembered for his work in developing and extending the field.

I met Jack when I began work at CRS in 1985. Practically my first assignment was to join Jack in managing our agency?'s response to the question of developing potential oil and gas resources in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge ?- a topic that remains controversial 25 years later. As a biologist, I was well-versed in many aspects of the issue, but for many others, I went to the ?""Geology and Industry School of Jack.?"" The lessons he taught me later led an oil industry executive to ask me what company I had worked for!
In a short time, we both came to enjoy our discussions and collaboration, and frankly, we delighted in trying to understand how a different mind approached a complex problem. I learned a great deal, and really enjoyed it. In an actual classroom, I?'ll bet he was a wonderful teacher. And on top of that, he was a wonderful mentor to a young colleague. My condolences to all of his family.
