

Lupe Theresa Carpio, 87, a longtime resident of Gill, passed away Monday, May 16, 2016, at Hospice of Northern Colorado inpatient unit. She was born on December 12, 1928, in Greeley to George and Felipa (Avila) Herrera.
Lupe was salutatorian of her graduating class at Gill High School in 1949. Afterward, she headed to Denver and attended Barnes Business College before working at Pan American Record Supply Co. When her high school sweetheart — also named Lupe – finished his tour in the Navy, the two married on November 27, 1955, at St. Cajetan's Church in Denver.
Lupe supported her husband on the family dairy farm northeast of Gill, painting pens and keeping the books while raising four children. In addition to being present at nearly all of her children's and grandchildren's many activities, she donated her time to the Greeley Public Library and supported Our Lady of Peace church. After the couple quit farming, she enjoyed going to Rockies games, playing the slots in Blackhawk and Las Vegas, and visiting family across the country. Lupe enjoyed reading Danielle Steele novels, doing crossword puzzles and being decades ahead of the adult coloring fad.
Lupe is survived by her husband of 60 years, Lupe Carpio; sons, Robert Carpio (Darlene) of Yuma and Raymond Carpio (Deb) of Kersey; daughters, Susan Carpio of Bellevue and Linda Shapley (Edward) of Centennial; sisters, Carmen Lucero of Denver, Helen Lomeli of Apple Valley, Calif., Jo Harris of Denver and Jennie Montoya of Denver; brothers, Manuel Herrera of Ault, Tony Herrera of Denver, Louis Herrera of Laguna Niguel, Calif., Arthur Herrera of Orange, Calif., and Andrew Herrera of Denver; seven grandchildren, Christopher, Raeann, Stephanie, Steven, Jase, Graham and Bennett; and four great-grandchildren, Jacob, Brayden, Caleb and Kiliana.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Amelia Cornejo, and Frances Herrera.
A prayer service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 20, 2016, at the Allnutt Macy Chapel, 702 13th St., Greeley, with inurnment at Linn Grove Cemetery. There will be a reception at the Allnutt Reception Center after the services.
