She was born on March 23, l925 in Woodland Park, Colorado to Arthur “Artie” Spielman and Mary Madaline (Morton) Spielman. She grew up in Woodland Park and attended school there completing her education during WWII. She would always tell the story about how she was doing a school play the day Pearl Harbor was bombed.
Margaret married Gilbert Thorpe on August 28, l944 and moved to Guffey, Colorado where she and Gilbert ranched for numerous years spending time between Guffey and Cripple Creek, Colorado. All three of their children were born in Cripple Creek.
In the early 1970’s, she moved to Mosca, Colorado to continue ranching and farming in the San Luis Valley. On August 26th, l978 she married George B. Curtis. She and George continued to live in the Valley until they moved to Arizona in the 1980’s. In Arizona, she and George became miners and passed many days wandering the hills and working a gold mining operation. After spending almost 20 years in Arizona, George and Margaret moved to La Salle, Colorado, living close to Margaret’s daughter.
Margaret was known for her ambition and interest in many things. She had an amazing green thumb, and she loved gardening. The family always teased her about her garden acreage, and all the nieces and nephews have stories about something she had grown and made them eat. Spinach seemed to be in everyone’s conversation. The flowers she raised brought her many county fair awards. She was a talented seamstress and cook, and she taught sewing and cooking to 4-H members throughout the years. She loved raising chickens so our lives were always full of baby chickens and egg based recipes. She also spent time doing ceramics, scrapbooking, and even playing drums and piano in a small country band. Margaret always had a project going, and she pursued the projects with total interest, energy, and focus. She was a very intelligent woman who loved things that challenged her mind. She read voraciously and had a knowledge base that could cover any subject that was brought forth. She endeavored to be a well rounded student of the world. She was a role model for all of the family members and friends (young and old) who shared her life.
In her later years, she became involved in Eckancar as her spiritual path and found much joy and comfort in the teachings. She also became a teacher in her spiritual path sharing ideas and writing prolifically about her belief experiences.
Margaret is survived by her children Douglas E. Thorpe (Susan), Gloria F. Mestas (Orlando), Russel B. Curtis (Judy), and Larry L. Curtis; her grandchildren, Jordan A. Mestas, Samantha A. Milyard, William R. Curtis (Ruth), John W. Curtis, Heather Curtis and Jennifer and Sean Gordon; her sisters, Elene Kile, Madeline Gappa, and her brother, Barney Spielman (Alyene), and many nieces and nephews.
