Melissa was born in Riverside, CA. Her father was a marine and moved around a lot. Home base was always Louisville, CO where her father was born. She went to CU, graduated with an MBA, and was on the swim team.
Melissa and Kirk met in 1972 and they married in 1980. They owned Colorado Copier Systems where she was an integral part of growing it. They sold in 1988.
In 1990 she had the twins Meagan and Brenna. Melissa always had a lifelong dream of owning a ranch. During a 1993 trip to Montana, the Ranch they saw was covered with Knapp weed, so it was not viable. Returning to Boulder she was able to testify at Boulder County meetings and have them allocate over $2,000,000 for weed projects.
In 1994 she had Jacqueline her 3rd daughter. Melissa was a writer and finished a book about her dad, and another partially finished about ancient Rome. She homeschooled all the girls and then in July 1997 she had 4 heart attacks because of a dissection of the left main artery. She had a triple bypass and 25% damage to her heart.
In August following the heart attack, the whole family attended a writers conference in Maui where she won 1st prize for the book about her Dad. It was the first time a non-fiction book had won. She went on to write another book about her heart attack, and spoke in front of nurses groups to explain what she went through and how they could be more aware of what the patient was experiencing- especially the respirator tube.
After 6th grade Meagan and Brenna, and 3rd grade for Jacqueline she started home schooling again all the way through high school. In 2008 she had cardiac arrest at a Basketball game and about 1% chance of survival after flat lining for 6-8 minutes. A team of EMTs saved her. She had a defibrillator put in, but regretted it. When the battery needed to be replaced she decided to remove it.
She was always giving back and would target battered and disadvantaged women, kids, animals, and the elderly, and eventually started the “Highest Image Foundation”, a 501C3 nonprofit.
She finally found her dream ranch, and had just completed all her ranch projects she had always wanted. This included her green house, chickens, outside wood burner to heat the house, cow herd, and shire horses.
She passed away from cardiac arrest 7/23/15.
The funeral will be held at the Abbey of Saint Walberga 1029 Benedictine Way Virginia Dale CO. at 9am on Friday the July 31st. Donations can be sent to “The Highest Image Foundation” which is located at 528 S Taylor Ave, Louisville CO 80027.
