On January 1st, 1934, she was born in Mina, South Dakota, to Geneva and Frank Steen. Unfortunately, she lost her father at the young age of eight years old. With her mother working multiple jobs, she and her sister, Verna, took on cooking and cleaning for the family. She met the love of her life, Harold (Bud) Burr, and they were married on June 25th, 1952, in Guthrie Center, Iowa. They completed their family with the birth of a daughter and a son. In 1958 the family moved to Eagle, Colorado, as Peg once put it, “as soon as we could!”
She was a devout Lutheran. She was active in her church, serving on boards and committees as called. While living in Eagle, Colorado, she was instrumental in getting the Gypsum Lutheran church on the National Register of Historic Buildings. After moving to Greeley, Colorado in 2000, Peg served as a deacon for Redeemer Lutheran Churn for several years. She was also part of a group that sewed quilt tops for the needy. She felt she had accomplished one of her most essential callings from the Lord when she helped lead her good friend and neighbor, Eddie Grant, to accept the Lord as his savior.
Peg valued education and history. She started a kindergarten when her daughter Vicki was of that age, and there was not one in Eagle for Vicki to attend. Being a Girl Scout leader was a great joy to her. She was a charter board member of the Eagle Valley Scholarship Fund and served through six US presidents. One of her happiest moments was when President Gerald Ford attended the ceremony honoring her when she resigned from the Scholarship Fund and presented her a plaque recognizing her 25 years of service.
She enjoyed going to the mountains, playing pool, and playing board games with her family. She had a phenomenal memory and had an insatiable appetite for US history, especially anything concerning the early presidents. She often commented on how she had the best family and friends the Lord had given anybody.
Peg was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 54 years, Bud Burr, her son, Dan Burr and her sister Verna J. Long. She is survived by; her daughter Vicki (Rudy) Garcia, her daughter-in-law Yvonne Burr-Zeman (Michael), her granddaughter Erin (Kevin) Burr-Adair, her great-granddaughter Maia Adair, and her grandson Cory Burr. In addition, she is survived by one brother Don (Kathy) Pritchett, and several beloved nieces and nephews. Deb Kennet also survives her, a woman Peg mentored as a young girl and loved like a daughter.
Burial service for Peg will be at Linn Grove Cemetery in Greely, Colorado. In lieu of cards or flowers, donations in memory of Peg can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at act.alz.org.
