Bert was born December 17, 1945 in Sterling, CO. She was the oldest of John and Margaret May’s four children, often taking care of her younger siblings. Bert graduated Evans High School in 1964, and soon thereafter married her high school sweetheart, Ginter Speyer on June 14, 1964. During their first years of marriage, Bert worked at State Farm in Greeley while Ginter completed his bachelor degrees from Colorado State College. She was later hired by the United States Postal Service and excelled in numerous roles, including mail carrier, supervisor, Postmaster, and Equal Employment Opportunity Investigator. During the last half of her career, Bert was an active leader in the National Association of Postmasters of the United States (NAPUS). She retired from the postal service in 2004 after over 30 years of service. During their marriage, Bert and Ginter lived in several towns in Northern Colorado, ultimately settling in Estes Park.
Bert knew how to “show up”. She was a steadfast resource to her friends and family from a very early age. Throughout her life, she was a selfless caregiver for her children, grandchildren, spouse, and parents. Bert was a fierce advocate for all those around her. Whether it was through her leadership in NAPUS, her involvement with her children’s schools, her time coaching cheer, her engagement with ZONTA, or her facilitation of classes for elderly citizens in Greeley, Bert worked tirelessly to help others throughout her life. Bert’s generous and kind nature had a profound impact on the lives of her children, their friends, and the cheerleaders she coached at Estes Park High School.
Bert believed in always doing the right thing, an example that will live on through her children, grandchildren, and friends. Her legacy will no doubt continue to make the world a better place. Bert was and is a very much loved wife, mother, Nana, and friend. Her generous heart and deep love for her family will be forever remembered.
Bert is survived by her children, Dirk, Kasey, Damon, and Damon’s wife, Jammie; grandchildren Maxwell, Dane, Jonah, Wren, Zea, and Mila. Bert is preceded in death by her husband, Ginter, her parents John and Margaret May, and brother Terry May.
