While I never got to know Stan Schumm personally, his work and legacy has had a significant impact on my career as a geomorphologist. Back in the 80's, I was accepted into the graduate program at CSU to work in Stan's group as a Masters student. However, life took me in different directions. Eventually I completed an MS in geomorphology at UC Santa Cruz with Bob Anderson, then went on to do my PhD at Penn State working with Tom Gardner, a former grad student of Stan's. Thus, in a round about way, I ended up as Stan's academic ""grandson"", learning his imprint of the science of fluvial geomorphology through both Bob and Tom. During a recent field trip with Ellen Wohl at CSU, we visited the ""hallowed"" site of Stan's famous flume and rainfall experiments. As a professor now at Cal Poly Pomona, rivers are at the heart of my teaching and research. Tomorrow, Earth Day, I'll take a moment to share Stan's legacy with my students in our Watershed Restoration class.

I was a graduate student of Dr Schumm's 1982-84, coming to CSU from Cambridge University (I had been recommended specifically to study at CSU by my professor at Cambridge, Dick Chorley).  This was a great time for me.  I loved being part of SAS's research group - Stan was such an enthusiast, always asking interesting questions, and showing such a love for the subject.  I found his research fascinating.  I remember many happy evenings with him and Ethel with lots of food, and maps spread out across the floor!

Chris and Mrs. Schumm. I just found out about your loss. I would like to express my condolences. You may or may not remember me, but Dr. Schumm christened me the 'great looby' back in both Chris and my college days.

To the Schumm Family:
As a military veteran, CSU alum (Ph.D.) and former scientist/administrator at CSU in the Warner College of Natural Resoruces, I want to extend my condolences and sadness in hearing of Stan's passing. Over the past 20 years I have had numeruos occasions to encounter him on campus and at symposia to discuss his seminal work in geomorphology and our mutual interests in military and environmental interfaces. I know Stan greatly valued his military service and those, including his family members, who continue to serve. Stan always struck me as a congenial, intelligent and engaging professional who cared about others. I know his legacy lives on in many of the students, faculty and veterans he encountered. May he rest in peace -his job well done.

To Ethyl and the family, 
Stan was one of the giants in the field of Geomorphology. His research was broad but cohesive; he saw how the parts fit together. His research methods established a model for those who came after him. He moved the field with nearly every publication.
     But Stan was more than this. He was a genuinely nice guy. I recall as a new assistant professor at the University of Denver that he invited me up to CSU to tour his research facility with him. Then he invited me to bring my geomorohology classes up as well. The classes were in awe to be in his presence. Heck, I was pretty much in awe as well. He always had time for everyone. I learned that this was a trait of the really, really, big ""names"" in any field - like Walt Wischmeier in Soil Erosion, as well as Reds Wolman and my mentor, Dick Hadley. Heaven has a great set of Geomorphologists. What a great guy!

Stan was a wounderful friend of Billie and I. He was a great colleague and an inspertion in my careeer as a Hydraulic Engineer with the U.S. Geological Survey, Colorado State University and Ayres Associates.  At CSU I always had my graduate studentents take his classes because he inspired them and broadened their knowledge of the physical processes in the studies of rivers.

We were together at the rehab center in 2009 and now together in grieving our losses.  I am so sorry for your loss and know the empty feeling one feels at such a loss as your husband Stanley's absence.  Please accept my condolences and if,  as a neighbor, I can help you, please let me know.

I met Stan while working early in my career at Mussetter Engineering.  He was very influential to me as a young scientist and developed my way of thinking about land formation and the processes involved.  
I remember working with Stan in Idaho in the mid 90's and watching him read a river system like a history book and trying to take in as much as I could.  I also remember him jumping up on downed trees and walking on them like a balance beam and marveling at what a free spirit he seemed to be.  
I will always remember Stan, his great influence to the science community and to a young scientist who didn't know a whole lot about geomorphology.  My condolences go out to his family.  I send good thoughts and prayers and thank Stan for fond memories of the greatest scientist I have ever met.

Dear Ethel and family - Words cannot express the sadness many of us feel at Stan's passing. The world has lost a truly great world class geoscientist, teacher, mentor, and friend. Although he was a teacher and mentor to many, his warm smile, kind and friendly nature, and wonderful wit are what drew most of us to him. I worked with Stan in the late 1980s and early 1990s and thoroughly enjoyed working with him both in the field and in the office. I think I loved his sense of humor and playfulness most. Doing field work with Stan was always an adventure because he loved to find odd things and use them in a humorous way. As you know, Stan also loved to explore and I experienced that many times when he spontaneously would take us well out of the way of whatever project we were working on to see some interesting site or feature. Stan will be missed, but we will all have those wonderful memories of him that will remind us of how blessed we were to have him in our lives.

Dear Schumm Family:
What a great man!  As a CSU Grad student in the early 1970's I learned so much from Stan about the river continuum theory and how rivers work.  Stan always had time to visit with students.  I remember the sign that he had on his desk for many years, probably from Ethel, that was in a small frame which said ""Just Say No!"", but Stan could not do it.  He was always ready to discuss issues, listen to students, and investigate interesting geomorphological aspects of the earth.  He was a leading researcher and thinker,  always probing and evaluating.  He will be missed.  Our condolences.

Ethel, and all of Stan's family- It was my honor to know him and be his dentist for many years. Prior to my unintended early retirement, I always enjoyed seeing both of your names on my book! He was a very interesting, yet modest gentleman. Everybody will miss him.

Stanley's professional life was an integral part of his life as a whole.  We used to tease him about his sandbox at ERC where he spent so much time.  As with all great men, Stan's professional life and family life were lovingly supported and assisted by Ethel.  My fondest memories were of playing a card game, I believe they called spoons, on the family room floor.  Also, there were some lively ""dives"" for the black olives at the dinner table.  When Chris required an involved surgery, Stan paced the floor and suffered through the ordeal as all loving fathers should.  When Brian required ""guidance,"" it was done firmly, quietly, and was instantly respected by a ""young man.""  Please know that time will heal; but you will always miss him.  My thought and prayers go out to all of you--today and into the tomorrows.

Dear Ethel and family:
Stan will be missed by all that met and knew him.  He lead an amazing life as a scientist, family man and friend.  His academic accomplishments brought both honor and recognition to him and Colorado State University.  He will be missed in all the communities where he worked and interacted.  I entend my sincere condolences to you in this time of loss.

SAYOHNARA Dr. Schumm.  I could not imagine I would say the final good-bye to you this early.  Meeting you at CSU in 1979 changed the prospect of my life completely.  I was so lucky I could restart studying geomorphology under your instruction.  Every time I tried to express my appreciation, you smiled and said ??oI did nothing for you.???  Yes, Dr. Schumm, you did a lot for me.  Although I am not a great geomorphologist as you are, I have been studying geomorphology sincerely to the nature as you showed me.  I will continue to study geomorphology as you did and work on my experiments.  SAYOHNARA again Dr. Schumm.  Please wait until I come there someday and we can discuss about the evolution of landform, in the world to come. 
  Mrs. Schumm, your warm heart helped me as much as Dr. Schumm??Ts instruction.  Your sorrow at losing the dearest person would be beyond our imagination.  However, please remember we are always with you, even though we are far away in earthquake-laden Japan.

Stan and Ethel were among the first to welcome me to Fort Collins, and I will never forget their warmth and kindness.  Stan's positive personality, wry humor, openness, and genuine support for so many will last in my memory - not to mention his wonderful outlook on ""doing science"" and outstanding work in teaching and geomorphology.

I did not know him well, but from the day I arrived at CSU Stan genuinely welcomed me, and he always warmly greeted me and we chatted on his post-retirement visits to the department.  I will miss his unwavering and exemplary positive spirit.
