

Barbara Jane Black, 80, of Greencastle, passed away on January 12, 2025. Born in Greencastle, she was the daughter of Edwin Gifford and Mary Jane Black. She was a 1962 graduate of Greencastle High School and a 1967 graduate of the University of Illinois Champagne-Urbana, with a degree in Medical Records Administration.
While in college, Barbara was a member of the U.S. Wheelchair Team and qualified for the 1963 Paralympic Games held near London, England. She competed in swimming and field events.
Upon graduation from college, Barbara started her career at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago as Director of Medical Records. She retired after 30 years in the role of Assistant Administrator for patient-support services. She loved her job at the Institute and made many lifelong friends. She then went on to join Access Living, a non-profit organization, advocating for the inclusion, empowerment, and independence of the disability community.
Barbara loved to travel, visiting many places across the globe, including Europe, Mexico, and Hawaii to name a few.
After retirement, Barbara returned to her home in Greencastle, to care for her mother until her passing in 2007. She remained in Greencastle, where she enjoyed reading, working on the Board of her HOA community, and spending time with family and friends.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, brother John Gifford Black, and her sister Betty Jane Black.
She is survived by her nieces, Kimberly Black (Scott Sheridan), and Jenny (Michael) Yeager, grandniece, Vienne and grandnephew, Sam.
A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.
