A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 27, 2020, at Hanes Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel, 6000 West Gate City Boulevard, with Rev. Jean Nall officiating. Interment will follow in Guilford Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 1:45 p.m. prior to the service.
In addition to her parents, Audrey was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Stewart E. (Pete) Frye, Sr. She is survived by her sister, Judy Boyd-Frye. Audrey had no children of her own but was very close to her nephew, Stewart E. Frye, Jr. and wife, Debi and nieces, Kelly Frye Sharpe and husband, Kirt, Tracy Frye Stanford and husband, Bob. She also cared deeply for her nine great nieces and nephews and their families.
Audrey was a graduate of Greensboro Senior High School (Grimsley) in 1950; graduate of Guilford College with a Bachelor of Arts in Religion and graduate of Nova Southeastern University with a Masters in Child Care Administration. From 1953 to 1959, Audrey was the business secretary at Myers Park United Methodist Church in Charlotte, NC, worked with youth programs as counselor, and attended classes at Queens College.
From 1959 to 1976, her employment included educational assistant at First United Methodist Church, Lincolnton, NC, educational assistant and director of the Through-the-Week School at Memorial United Methodist Church, Charlotte, NC, educational assistant at Muirs Chapel United Methodist Church, Greensboro, NC, part-time secretary at Grace United Methodist Church, Greensboro, NC and director/teacher at the Week-Day School at Calvary United Methodist Church, Greensboro, NC.
From 1976 until retirement in 1992, Audrey was an instructor in the Early Childhood Education Department at Guilford Technical Community College, Jamestown, NC.
She served as lab coordinator for the education program and placed students in day-cares, preschools, special education classes and public schools throughout Guilford County, NC. She taught “Human Growth and Development” for the nursing department and was on the scholarship committee, library committee and was a student council advisor.
Audrey was an active member of GAEYC, NC-AEYC, NAEYC and VP member of the NEA and NCRSP. She was noted for workshop leadership in the field of early childhood education, especially in art, music, language arts and science. She was often asked to review textbooks for publishing companies and she along with her students were pleased and proud to see her name in the acknowledgements of a textbook. Audrey received the President’s Award and the Teaching Excellence award. She served as an ex-officio member of the Early Childhood Education Advisory Committee.
Audrey enjoyed writing, especially original children’s stories and shared them with children, her students and family members. She loved to travel and especially enjoyed visiting Europe.
In addition to being a member of the churches where she worked, Audrey was a former member of Glenwood United Methodist Church in Greensboro, NC. She attended Glenwood as a child and returned later as an adult. While there, she was made a Life Member of the UMW, Vice President of the UMW, Chairperson of the Worship Committee and was a member of a Circle, the Administrative Council, the Education Committee, the Centennial Committee, the Chancel Choir and hand bells, and taught an adult Sunday School Class.
Later, she joined Grace United Methodist Church along with her mother Mae Boyd. After working there many years before, she had always planned to return. After a short time, her mother became ill and Audrey was her primary care-giver until Mae entered her Heavenly Home on January 30, 2005. Activities at Grace include teaching the Faith/Fellowship Sunday School Class, member and program leader of Circle #2 and member of the church council and worship team as the greater coordinator for the Sunday services.
Audrey lived at Friends Homes Guilford in Greensboro, NC from September 2009, until her passing where she enjoyed leading Bible studies.
