Catherine Dixon Schlosser, “Kay” as she was known to her friends and family, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, August 6. She was preceded in death by her parents, Anson and Lydia Dixon; her brothers, Lester, Bernard, Frances, James, Vincent, and Al; and her beloved daughter, Joan Monahan.
She is survived by her son, David Schlosser (Ellen) of Greensboro; daughter, Ann Pearman (Dennis) of Asheboro; two grandsons, Jonathan McCanless (Jessica) of Boone and Joseph Schlosser (Julie) of Raleigh. She also leaves three great grandchildren, Ashlyn, Madison, and Chase Schlosser.
After her family, she was proudest of her career as a nurse. She graduated from St. Leo’s School of Nursing in 1945, was a nurse at St. Leo’s Hospital until it closed, then moved to Wesley Long Hospital and retired from there as the Assistant Director of Nursing in 1986.
Kay was among the original members of St. Pius X Catholic Church, where she loved her “pew family” and she faithfully attended services and Bible studies and also volunteered each month on the Echoes newsletter with her daughter, Ann. She was the last of the original homeowners in the Kirkwood neighborhood, having lived there for 63 years. Many people in the neighborhood knew her as the “Walking Lady”, walking an hour a day on the Kirkwood streets, even on the day she passed at the age of 90. Kay never tired of learning, reading the Wall Street Journal daily and travelling when she could, including two trips to Europe and a trip to Canada along with annual beach trips to the Atlantis Lodge in Salter Path, NC. She loved to maintain her beautiful yard that was designed, planted and cared for by her son David, you could see her outside on almost a daily basis picking up twigs and pulling up ivy.
The family would like to thank the staff of Greensboro Ophthalmology and Moses Cone Hospital for their care of her on her final day. In addition, many thanks to the neighbors and friends who have had so many kind words so say about her.
Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 13, at St. Pius X Catholic Church on North Elm Street, followed by the funeral mass at 11:00 a.m. A reception will be held after the service in the parish hall.
In lieu of flowers, Kay would have preferred donations to Catholic Relief Services or the St. Pius X Catholic Church Building Fund.
