Charles Daniel “Dan” Forney III passed away peacefully at his home on June 26, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. Those who knew Dan will remember his unwavering optimism, his gift for encouragement, and his knack for humor. He was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, a caring brother, and a loyal friend.
A fifth-generation North Carolinian, Dan was born on July 9, 1943 in Shelby, NC to the late Charles Daniel Forney Jr. and the late Frances Walker Forney. He was raised by loving parents in the small mill town of Lawndale, NC, where he shared a close bond with his brother and sister.
From a young age, Dan displayed a curious and inquisitive mind. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout and received national recognition as a champion in soil judging. These early accomplishments reflected his passion for learning. Dan went on to attend NC State University, where he earned both a B.S. and an M.S. in Nuclear Engineering. While at NC State, he became a proud member of the Sigma Chi fraternity, where he formed deep, lifelong friendships with his fraternity brothers.
On March 29, 1969, Dan married Betty Jo White of Burlington, NC. The couple made their home in Greensboro. Dan was a devoted, patient, and caring husband who deeply loved Betty Jo. Together, they raised three children, providing a home filled with adventure, love, and security. Dan loved his children and grandchildren, proudly encouraging each to find their own path rooted in strong values and good choices.
Recognizing the early potential of computers, Dan co-founded several companies focused on developing computer systems for physicians. He served as President of CSS, Inc. where he mentored countless employees—sharing not only his knowledge of business and technology but also his belief in enjoying one’s work and living with purpose. Before and after his career in business, Dan taught college-level computer science and physics at High Point College, UNC-Greensboro, and Guilford College.
Dan’s friends and family remember him as a complete and well-rounded man who genuinely sought to make a positive difference in the lives of others. He was loving, patient and kind to everyone he met. He was quiet, but his words were always thoughtful and to the point. With a deep understanding of science and physics, Dan was also endlessly creative. He carried a vast and ever-evolving repertoire of jokes—always ready with the perfect one for any moment. A longtime member of First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro, Dan’s faith was strong and steadfast.
Dan enjoyed the classic country and gospel music of his youth, the Motown hits of his college days, fast sports cars, small dogs, the NC State Wolfpack, and time at the beach. He treasured family memories, documenting life through countless videos and drawers full of photos. Dan was an expert sailor, finding every opportunity to be on the water. Sailing brought him peace and freedom, combining many of the best aspects of his life---physics, engineering, nature, friendship, and family.
In 2000, a medical student discovered a renal cell tumor during a routine exam, enabling early and successful treatment. For 25 years, Dan courageously faced cancer, maintaining a high quality of life and never complaining or losing hope. Every day was Dan’s favorite day, and his family and friends are grateful for the time shared with him.
Dan is survived by his wife, Betty Jo White Forney; son Jason Daniel Forney (Sarah) of Arlington MA; daughter Elizabeth Forney Ritter (Chris) of Charleston, SC; daughter Anna Forney Lackey (Chad) of Greensboro, NC; brother Michael Walker Forney of St. Paul MN; sister Carol Forney Temple (George) of Virginia Beach, VA; and 4 beloved grandchildren Lillian and Charles Forney, and Elle and Baxter Lackey.
