She graduated from Guilford High School in 1952 where she was Salutatorian of her class. She then completed a secretarial and bookkeeping course at King’s Business College in Greensboro. Employment at Greensboro Marble and Tile Company as secretary and bookkeeper followed. Then she worked at P. Lorillard when it first opened in Greensboro as the payroll typist. Following this, she was a Department Chief’s secretary at Western Electric in Burlington.
In 1963, she enrolled at Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Virginia, where she received a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Then school teaching followed until her retirement.
In addition to her parents she was deceased by 10 brothers and sisters.
Surviving are her twins, Robin (Larry) Byrd and Robert (Linda) Rives; two grandchildren, Daniel Bowers and Crystal Rives; great granddaughter, Kylie Bowers and many nieces and nephews.
Doris was a member of Rolling Roads Baptist Church and was a member of the Friendship Club at First Presbyterian Church.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home Sedgefield Chapel conducted by the Reverend Michael Barrett. Interment will follow in Guilford Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 2:00 pm until time of the service.
