Doris Beanland Goodwin crossed the threshold from this life to the next on September 19, 2025, at the age of 101. True to her hardy New England stock, Doris had lived independently until age 99 and, at her death, was only two months short of reaching the age of 102.
Doris was born to Elizabeth McBride Beanland and Arthur Beanland on November 9, 1923, in Dartmouth, Massachusetts. She was the youngest of four children; she was preceded in death by her three sisters.
Doris graduated from the John Roberts Powers School, New York City. Shortly thereafter, she met Andrew Wentworth Goodwin, and they married on December 13, 1942. During 53 years of marriage, she and Andy had four children. Doris was preceded in death by Andy in 1996 and by two of her children, Ann Elise Goodwin in 1995 and Stephen Hilton Goodwin in 2013 (as well as his wife, Debbie, in 2024). She is survived by her daughter, Gainor Elizabeth Urian of Seaford, Delaware, and her son, Peter Wentworth Goodwin (Ellen Stebbins) of Marietta, Georgia.
During her many years as a homemaker, Andy's corporate moves took the family from Connecticut to New Jersey to North Carolina to Tennessee and finally back to North Carolina. After settling with her family in Greensboro, NC, in 1973, Doris remained there until her death.
In her spare time, Doris was an avid tennis player, playing until age 92. She also loved to read and, as a master sewer, she made clothing for many people. International travel was a highlight of her life, including business trips to Europe with her husband, and she enjoyed many other trips with family (especially Carolina beach trips).
Doris is also survived by her seven grandchildren, Tracey Biggers, Andrew Goodwin (Ashley), Alyson Garland, Matthew Goodwin (Mandy), Jonathan Goodwin (Jenna), Catherine Stebbins, and Rebecca Goodwin, as well as nine great-grandchildren.
Doris will lie in state from 9 AM to 4 PM at Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Service, 515 North Elm Street, Greensboro, NC 27401. The family will hold a graveside service on October 7, 2025, at 11:00 AM, at Westminster Gardens, in Greensboro, NC. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be directed to Doctors Without Borders-USA, POB 5030, Hagerstown MD 21741.
