Dorothy “Dot” Melton, a woman of great faith, loving wife, devoted mother and affectionate grandmother was reunited in the presence of Jesus Christ with her husband, William F. “Bill” Melton, parents, sister, Lucy Johnson, and brothers, Harry and Allan Land on June 7, 2016. She was born on December 8, 1928 in Norfolk, VA to the late Harry L. and Clarice F. Land.
The family will receive friends June 12, 2016 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at Hanes-Lineberry N. Elm chapel. Dot’s life will be celebrated during a service of remembrance on June 13, 2016 at 11 am at First Baptist Church chapel. The family will receive friends following the service in the atrium of the church.
Dot moved with a cousin to Charlotte to attend Business College, which led to employment with Home Federal Savings and Loan. She joined St. John’s Baptist Church in Charlotte and served in several leadership roles and also met the love of her life, Bill. They married in 1953 and enjoyed a wonderful marriage of 32 years. She always provided a loving Christian home as a homemaker. They relocated to Greensboro in 1980, where she began an active role at First Baptist Church and participated in the Shining Light Sunday School class, Christian Women’s Club and Bible Study Fellowship. She had the joy of being a leader of a small group for a number of years. Dot’s family is extremely grateful to the Shining Light class for their many years of support for Dot through prayer, cards and visits and the CD ministry at First Baptist which provided the Sunday teachings to her after she was too ill to attend services.
Dot is survived by her children, Patti and husband Scott House of Cape Girardeau, MO, Billy and wife Julie Melton of Greensboro and Ken Melton of Jamestown; brother-in-law, Pete Johnson; sisters-in-law, Frankie Land, Anna Melton, Rose Melton and Jo Melton; grandchildren, Juliana and husband Brian Lagesse and Jessica Melton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
