Dr. Genevieve Marie Bartol

Our dearest Genevieve passed away suddenly on Friday, January 3rd surrounded by family. Gen was a beloved lifelong companion of Chris Judge for 50 years, and cherished parent of Johanna Judge. As a colleague, partner, parent, sister, aunt, godmother, and friend, her life was dedicated to compassion and service.

Genevieve was born in Allentown PA on April 14th, 1936. Gen (Jeannie) started life as one of ten children whose parents’ valued education, faith, and family. Gen exemplified the Beatitudes, loving others and caring for the sick with unwavering kindness. Her actions, along with those of Christine Judge, were recognized by the North Carolina legislature. She encouraged others, promoting their achievements while pursuing excellence and educational opportunities for herself and her students.

A graduate of Villanova University, the University of the Philippines Maryknoll, and the Teachers College, Columbia University. Genevieve pursued her education with academic rigor and received her doctorate in education, teaching at Louisiana State University, Duke University, East Carolina University, and the University of North Carolina Greensboro. She also spent five years teaching in the Philippines. Her contributions to the nursing profession were invaluable. Her love of nursing prompted her to continue publishing post-retirement particularly for the holistic journal of nursing where Genevieve authored book reviews.

Genevieve retired from her position of division chair of Psychosocial nursing at UNC Greensboro. She was a teacher, author, and researcher whose pioneering works in the early 1990s included the use of story for cultural competence, mind-body-brain interactions and the application of alternative modalities in nursing practice.

Genevieve loved her family, her beloved pets Prince and Skye, soft oatmeal raisin cookies, Scrabble, crossword puzzles, reminiscing about the past and singing German songs loudly as she went to bed. She was a steady presence in the life of our huge family, always available to give advice without judgment, guiding many of us through difficult times with her quiet, thoughtful manner.

Gen is predeceased by her parents, Margaret and Aloysius Bartol and siblings Cathy, Dorothy, Theodore, Eleanor, Sister Carol, Tommy, Barbara and is survived by Chris Judge, sisters Alice Horneman and Marge McKenna and husband Jack, daughter Joanna Judge and son-in-law Rich, grandson Joshua Judge, her wonderful caregiver and friend Bill Dawson, and many nieces and nephews. She was especially close to her nephew George Coleman with whom she spoke every single week by telephone, and niece Kathleen Bartholomew for whom she was both godmother and mentor. Genevieve made the world a better place for so many of us she was loved, and that love will be sorely missed.

A Rosary Prayer Service will start at 10:30 a.m. followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am, Friday, January 31, 2025, at St. Pius the Tenth Catholic Church, 2210 North Elm Street with a reception to follow in the Simmons Center at the church.
