

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 22, 2016, at Trinity Church with Dr. Marc Putnam officiating. Interment will follow in Westminster Gardens Cemetery. Visitation hours will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
Ed was born February 12, 1926 in Harrisburg, PA to the late Edwin Jay and Ruth Forster Baum. He graduated from Duke University in 1950 with BS in Chemistry. For more than 30 years, he worked at Burlington Industries including 9 years as Director of Purchasing. After retirement from Burlington Industries, he worked as a consultant for North Carolina State University College of Textiles.
Ed proudly served his country while in the United States Army during World War II in the Pacific Theatre including Okinawa from 1944 to 1946. He was a member of Trinity Church and served in various leadership positions, Kiwanis Club, S.C.O.R.E. and a supporter of Youth for Christ, and Young Life. During his years of living at Well Spring, he also enjoyed doing some volunteer work with staff and residents. He loved playing the saxophone and clarinet in big bands during high school and college. He enjoyed traveling, big band music and especially Duke Basketball. He also enjoyed dancing and Hershey's Chocolate.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Baum was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Haley Baum and his sister-in-law, Mary Kathryn Haley. He is survived by his sons, Jay Baum and wife Anita of Charlotte, NC, Wynn Baum and wife Kim of Kernersville, NC; grandchildren, Amber and husband Tim McTee of Harahan, LA, Brian and wife Sue Baum of Charlotte, NC, Caroline and husband Luke Miles of Wake Forest, NC, Jacob Baum of Charlotte, NC, Meredith and husband Ryan Zimmerman of Wake Forest, NC, Paige Baum of Raleigh, NC, Katrina Baum of Charlotte, NC and great grandchildren, Sage and Isaac McTee, Kelsey, McKinley and Kara Baum, Spencer Miles and Ellie Zimmerman; brother-in-law, George Haley of Chatham, VA; nephew, George Harry Haley and wife Linda of Portsmouth, VA and niece, Pam Haley and son George of Maryville, TN.
The Baum family expresses great love and appreciation to the staff at Well Spring Memory Care for the wonderful care given to Ed.
