Elizabeth "Betty" M. Foley Deckert

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saint Paul The Apostle Catholic Church in Greensboro on Thursday, March 20th at 11:00 a.m. Inurnment will take place at a later date. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 19 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home at 515 N. Elm Street, Greensboro.

Betty was born and raised in the Bronx, New York. She attended Our Lady of Refuge Elementary School in the Bronx, and graduated from Cathedral High School in New York City in 1941. Upon graduation, Betty worked for AT&T as a switchboard operator, and was soon promoted to Supervisor. After starting her family, Betty left AT&T to become a full time mother. As her children grew older, Betty returned to the workforce as a Pharmacy Assistant at Flushing Surgical Supply. She later worked for a Hotel and Restaurant supplier, THC Systems in New York City, before relocating to North Carolina with her husband and son in 1979.

When Betty was in good health, she enjoyed the outdoors by collecting mineral specimens on Rockhounding trips, and was very proud of her finds at Herkimer, NY, and various other locations in North Carolina. For many years she was an active member of the Greensboro Gem and Mineral Club.

Betty is survived by her two children, Betty Jane Byrnes (husband Terence) of New York City, and Edmund Deckert, of the home. She is also survived by her two grandchildren, Catherine Byrnes, and Edmund Byrnes (wife Jennifer) and two Great Grandchildren. Alicia, and Aubrey Byrnes.

The family will be forever grateful to Margaret Simpson, a dear friend whose loving care and assistance helped make Betty’s last years so much happier. The family also wishes to acknowledge the loving care provided by the staff of Countryside Manor Nursing Home in Stokesdale, as well as the fine, caring physicians, nurses, and staff of Cornerstone Family Practice of Summerfield, especially Doctors Fred Wilson and Brent Burnett, and Doctor David Kaplan of Countryside Physicians.
