George Burton Chandler of Greensboro, North Carolina, beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend, died on January 13, 2025 from complications of pulmonary fibrosis. Since November of 2024 he resided at Carolina Pines in Greensboro, where in two short months, he made many friends.
George was born in the midst of the Great Depression in Milford, Connecticut to John and Altha Chandler. Along with his siblings, Richard (deceased), Marion (Stiewing), and Barbara (Morrison), he grew up and attended school in Milford. After graduating, he served in the Army for two years, over half of that in Korea where he earned a Bronze Star with Valor. When he returned home he married his high school sweetheart, Joan Hebert. They were together for 66 years, until her death in 2021.
George was employed as a tool and die maker for all of his working years. In his spare time he followed sports fanatically and played in softball and duckpin bowling leagues. He often brought his three young daughters, Denise (Bruce Wells), Diane (Doug Benham), and Karen (David Pruitt) along to his games. When he got a little older, he took up gardening and golf, at which he was proud of achieving three holes in one! After retiring, George and Joan lived in Florida for 11 years and then moved to North Carolina to be closer to family.
George was a hard worker and a devoted family man who loved to spend time with his grandchildren: Timothy, Brian, and Kimberly Wells; Claire and Sona Benham; and Heather Pruitt (deceased). He had a special bond with his great-grandson, Cameron Pruitt.
His sometimes gruff exterior masked a kind and loving heart. He was an attentive caretaker to Joan, who suffered from Type 1 diabetes. After she passed, he diligently took over the job of sending birthday, anniversary and Christmas cards to his children, grandchildren and friends. He leaves behind a trail of family and friends in Connecticut, Florida, and North Carolina who will miss him greatly.
The family is indebted to the staff at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, North Carolina and the staff at Carolina Pines.
He will be laid to rest with military honors at Salisbury National Cemetery, 200 Government Rd., Salisbury, NC 28144 on April 4, 2025 at 11:00 am.
