Howard Alexander Coomes passed from this life to paradise on Wednesday morning, September 22nd, 2021. He was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, and friend to many. Those who knew him well know how highly he valued and cherished his family, and how much comfort they brought him.
Howard Alexander Coomes was born on February 21st, 1936. He spent his childhood living in the mountains of Galax, Virginia before moving to Greensboro, North Carolina at age eight with his parents and sisters. Following high school he served in the US Navy for two years on the USS Intrepid, then attended university at Western Carolina. After graduation he began his career as an Ames tools salesman. His charisma and devotion to his work allowed him to build genuine, long lasting relationships with his clients, and he stayed on with Ames until his retirement.
Howard is survived by his beloved wife, Elaine Crotts Coomes, his sister Mrs. Sue Hadley and brother-in-law Mr. Jack Hadley, his son Mr. Bryan Coomes and daughter-in-law Laura Coomes, his daughter-in-law Christi Coomes, and his grandchildren Griffin, Sarah, Benjamin and Carson Coomes. He was preceded in death by his son, the late Mark Coomes.
Howard had a great sense of humor and enjoyed spending time in the company of neighbors, friends and family. He and Elaine often hosted and attended parties, grilling out and playing Hearts - and in Howard’s case, winning the game. When he wasn’t helping entertain guests, he loved playing and watching golf, spending time with Elaine, and going to the beach.
While Howard has left this world behind, we remember it was not his home, and that Christ promises a future without suffering, pain, or tears of sorrow, and invites us into fullness of joy and communion with Him forever.
A service will be held on Tuesday, September 28th at 11:00am at Community in Christ, Presbyterian Church. Friends will be received following the service at the church. Donations in his memory can be made to Community in Christ, the Wounded Warrior Project, or the Alzheimer’s Association.
