James Hicks Parks passed away on November 27, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born on April 7, 1945, in Wythe County, Virginia, he was the son of the late James Oscar Parks and Marjorie Lee Wyrick and was one of twelve children.
James proudly served in the United States Army for two years, followed by four years in the Army Reserve from October 2, 1966, to June 1, 1972. During this time, he also worked at Sears, where he spent 30 years, forming many lifelong friendships. When Sears closed its catalog order division, James continued forward with determination, establishing a successful business of his own during the next 22 years—Floor Sanding and Refinishing by James Parks. His craftsmanship, strong work ethic, and dedication to “doing every job just right” made him highly respected and in demand throughout the Greensboro community.
James possessed a special and extraordinary gift for music. He could hear a song only a few times, practice and learn it, and play it from memory as though he had known it forever—a talent that amazed everyone who heard him. James loved riding motorcycles and was an active member and leader in the Goldwing Road Riders Association. He also treasured the steady companionship of his loyal dog, Woody, who will miss him dearly.
James shared a loving and joyful marriage with his wife, Carol Parks, during their ten years together. Guided by his Christian faith, he centered his life on family, service, and love, and he expressed that faith through his heartfelt gospel music. He was a cherished husband, father, and grandfather whose gentle spirit and warmth touched all who knew him.
James was very appreciative of the closeness he shared with his brother Dicky’s family, spending many holidays, birthdays, and meals with them. A special thanks goes to Evonne and Londa Parks for making sure he was always included in those gatherings. He also had a long list of valued friends—too many to name individually—whom he cherished deeply and who brought joy to his life.
James is survived by his wife, Carol Osborne Parks; his son, James W. Parks; his stepdaughter, Stephanie Robl (John); and his step-grandchildren, Charles John "CJ" Robl and Sarah Margaret Robl.
His humor, generosity, and quiet strength will be deeply missed by his family and by all who were blessed to share in his life.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 14, 2025 at Hanes-Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel, 6000 West Gate City Blvd., Greensboro, NC 27407, He will be laid to rest in Guilford Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Red Cross or the American Cancer Society in James’s honor.
